I understood "traditional Afro-cuban, Cuban rhythms in your quote" to include rumba, bata, palo, Abakua, and other "folkloric" rhythms but not the rhythms played in Cuban popular music ie, tumbao, marcha, songo, timba patterns that have already been popularized in and outside of Cuba. If you include these popular music rhythms in what you are calling traditional Afro-cuban Cuban rhythms, I would agree with JC that no one would have a problem with you playing those rhythms in an r&B, funk or other popular music setting, and also that you don't want to just import a straight salsa tumbao into some other genre. You always need to listen and work back and forth with the other musicians to make it fit.

Call this picture "the show must go on!"...I was very sick in France when this picture was taken of me on the floor during a sound check...a French doctor came to my hotel room that didnt speak engish and gave me some kinda pills that made me even worse...I went to sound check dragging my ass along and had to lay down on the stage..one of the guys took th epic..what actually saved me from doing this gig while intensely sick was that Gloria Gaynor had in her contract that if less than 300 people showed up for the concert it would be canceled...and it was..that saved my ass that day...and we went onto the next gig...I laughed my ass off when i saw this ..hahahaha...damn...

JUST IN FROM MIAMI!!...A video of my Miami band Caribe from 1992 at Bayside...in case anyone brings it up I have sun lotion on my nose that is why it comes out in the video...i didnt know i had so much of it on...anyway these are my boys and friends to this day..I miss them all...21 minutes of me and them .chek the jam at the end!!....enjoy!....

New video with one of my new students Laura. This was her 6 lesson with me..I showed her a 'cascara' pattern played on two congas....as a 'guarapachangeo rhythmic concept, while i riff on top of it...tap along with us once i give you the clave on the conga and you will feel where it goes and falls within that cascara pattern and clave...

Here is another photo from my Disco days...for sound check at Don Kirshners Rock Concert 1975..Aquarius theatre in Los Angelese. Those white Gon Bops sounded so good I bought 3 of them some years later, they were provided for me for the show..

I am just seeing this photo for the first time since 1975 when i was on my first real road gig with Fessor Funk & The Queens 8th st. Funk Band(NYCity).."Fessor" aka Terry A. Lewis(no not Jimmy Jam, he was about 2 years old if that when this photo was taken) just connected with me after all these years...I also did my first recording with them as well...Of course we have all moved on and "The Fessor" is now a Minister and still singing as good today as he did then...He is the one in the middle with the shirt, Im at the end of the car leaning on my conga...I am so happy to have reconnected with a friend and a musical compatriot after all these years...
