Here is a short clip of my band, taken from saturday nights gig at Afro Cuban Sessions Live @ "The Basement."
In the clip we are performing Marc Anthony's classic bolero/cha cha cha, "Hasta Ayer".
We slow it down mid set to give the band & the dancers a break.

Nice work Abakua, the congas were sounding really sweet on that track.
I like the tuning too. What congas were you playing that night? Are they Matadors?

Hola Pavlo, thanks for the comments bro...
Im using 2 LP Classics (Tumba & Conga) and 1 x LP Giovanni Galaxy Conga (wood) in the centre with Mule skin as my main drum.

Here is another clip from the same gig that night:

That's a nasty looking skin on that galaxy! Nice and thick too..
I can almost hear what it would sound like just by looking at it.
Are mule skins available in Australia?

Got a gig tonight, just about time to go set up...
ciao
P

p.s Hey do you know Juan Carlos, saxophonist who used to live in Sydney?

Mule skins are not available, there are no mules here.
My one came on the drum already when I got it second hand.

yeh, I know Juan Carlos, I filled in on congas, at other times bongo for some gigs with his old band many years ago. Nice guy.

Hola Pablo, I havent played with Veneno in a while. I co-run my own 10 piece salsa dura band now.
My bro Tonio plays Congas with Veneno now (as well as being the timbalero in my band), not sure if he will be doing the gig in Adelaide though, last time we spoke about it he wasnt available for that date...

Here are some shots from sat nights gig, (same one as the video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tLds7kK9Lco )

Jamming with Sheila E. My bro Tonio on Timbales, Sheila E on Drums, Myself on Congas:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7dh2I_jJ-Q Not a very long clip, its only a short part of our jam.The congas were already set up far too low for me (but works for Sheila) It was already uncomfortable enough, then as I was playing, the Quinto slowly started lowering further down into the stand as it slowly gave way, by the time I had started this last solo it was so far down that I could not play it in its position. Ah well, we had a great time nonetheless.

Sheila E takes a Timbal solo while Tonio holds down a solid Songo on Drums:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q6AYMopYvlM

In the works are plans to bring Sheila back, but with her family Latin Jazz/Salsa band & guests. Sheila & the promoter are very interested in featuring Tonio & myself for the gig, and possibly even have my 12 piece Salsa Dura/Timba/Latin Jazz band do the support.
Once everyone was out, we got to hang for a little while with Sheila before she was taken away, she had to fly out a few hours after this. She is extremely humble and has a beautiful soul.
