Bump. The previous announcement of the Thursday midnight rumbas in NYC got removed from today's posts within minutes, I guess I posted just before the changeover time.
Timing is everything.

Well this is not rumba, and the conga track was recorded in NJ not NYC, but other than that it fits in this thread...
Here is a video of my daughter Camille Safiya's new song Island Gyal, shot by my nephew in Dominican Republic.

Also on YouTube at:

I am playing congas, I recorded the conga track in my basement studio with 2 SM57s into an RME Babyface, on top of the backing and vocal tracks in ProTools 10 on an old Macbook. Backing track by Frankie P, all vocals by Camille Safiya, the audio was mixed by Gonzalo Contreras in Premier Studios NYC, videography by Alfredo Lavergne "Fred Focus". We performed this tune at a block party in Washington Heights yesterday, she sang and I played congas, with this audio as the backing track.

Come check us out playing this tune and a few others at SOBs on Wednesday Aug 28.

Bump. Come to SOBs tomorrow and check us out.
PS It seems I often post right before the time at which the forum wipes out posts for the day and starts the new day. Hopefully this will stay posted longer than the half hour or so that it stayed last night.

Yeah, last week I never expected we would get a standing ovation from a hip hop crowd in their 20s. Of course there were no chairs in the place...

As a father, its inspiring.

Sometimes I get on a kick where I push my kids a little too much towards what I think they should be, this is an awesome example. So next time my 9 year old girl tells me she wants to be a baker (God damn Food Network), I will not trip-out and tell her she needs to use those same skills and be a chemist. ;)

Well we opened tonight at SOBs with 4 tunes, got another standing ovation, this time half the crowd was our family, friends and coworkers and everyone was standing to avoid the $15 minimum at the tables...
They did like it though, and lots of people I didn't know were clapping.

It is definitely worth it to support your kids' aspirations, whether they want to become musicians, chemists, bakers, or even rumber@s. Well, maybe not rumber@s. Anyway, it felt great when she announced me as her father on congas.

Tremenda rumba tonight at the Zinc Bar. Roman Diaz, Pedrito Martinez, Joaquin Pozo, Diosvany Valladares, Clemente Medina, Alfredo Diaz Pescao, Reinaldo, Matanzas and a few of us local guys. I was playing tres dos and guagua, and sat out a few songs to let the masters play. These are the best rumbas I have ever had the honor and pleasure of playing in. Every Thursday night, midnight to 1:30 am at the Zinc Bar, 82 W. 3rd St between Thompson and Sullivan. It was a packed house, SRO tonight, they said it will go through September and October. Anyone who is in the NYC area, you should really come down one Thursday night, you will rarely encounter a rumba this good outside Cuba.

Roman Diaz' Midnight Rumba is still happening every Thursday night at the Zinc Bar 82 W 3rd St between Thompson and Sullivan. From midnight to 1:30 am. $10 cover.
This is the best regular rumba I have ever had the pleasure and honor of participating in. Here are a couple of clips from YouTube, I am on tres dos in the first one and cata in the second:

And tomorrow Thursday May 8, Joaquin Pozo sextet at Lincoln Center. Check out the videos in this link. Joaquin is an amazingly musical and talented conga player with chops in the same league with Giovanni and Anga and a beautiful melodic style, always in clave, not rudiment based.

Lincoln Center David Rubinstein Atrium on Broadway between 62nd and 63rd St.
7:30 pm (doors at 7), free admission!

Looks good Jorge!

If you ever back in L.A., you still need to visit Rincon Rumbero.

Definitely!
Is the Rincon Rumbero still the first Saturday of each month? Tentatively right now mid August or late September look most likely, but that may change.

For those of you in the NYC metropolitan area, Roman Diaz' Midnight Rumbas still going strong at the Zinc Bar every Thursday night at midnight for the last 2 and a half years.
Extra special rumba New Years' Eve with 2 sets at 11 pm and 1 am. Special guests Mauricio Herrera on quinto, Emilio Valdes (son of Chucho) on drum set, Jennifer Hernandez (daughter of Horacio 'El Negro') singing and other surprise guest artists, maybe even a piano player who can play rumba.

They shut down the videos someone was doing every week, but here is one from last June.
