SONOC CUBNA QUINTO OR SKIN ON SKIN 10"

Postby Omelenko1 » Sat Jun 18, 2011 3:23 pm

Due to recent acquisition I will either let go of a Cuban made SONOC 10' quinto or a Skin on Skin 10" quinto.
SONOC is Cuban caoba, no longer processed after 1984. What Los Muñequitos and Tata played. The SOS is a 10" flat sawn oak from Jay early 80's. Unique one of a kind instruments resulting in 40 yrs. of collecting. Call me or PM me. 305 807-7421.

The reason being that I just got a nice set of vintage Tom Flores Valje, not that I needed them, but you know how it is. This quinto belonged to my friend and ex Chicago rock group percussionist Guille Garcia. Guille went to see his mom in the early 80's, took some of his recordings with Chicago to La Habana and was presented with 5 SONOCS from EGREM. These are Caoba wood. I managed to get all 5 of them from Guille. About 10 years ago I sold them but wanted to keep the quinto, about 2 years ago I was able to get the quinto back from the guy I had sold them to. Attached find all 5 of them by my pool. This glorious quinto came back to me but now I'm forced to sell it.

I'll take $550 for it. As a quinto is the best I've heard, you can also play tumbao (marcha) on it by not tuning it so high. It projects a very high pitch as a quinto, but also a very fat full sound as a conga when used in tumbao (marcha).

SONOC stopped processing Caoba by a goverment mandate in 1984. SONOC then used Cedro as a substitute. I will say these are circa 1981/82. I remember Guille's daughters (twins) were 4 or 5 when I got all 5 and now they are in their mid 30's. The quinto is in excellent condition.

My sonocs are are a bit older , probably 70's and they're cedro, don't know exactly why but you've seen them, got the old school hoops , super thick. I'm wondering if there was a period when they switched to caoba exclusively. The best sounding quinto I've ever played on was a caboa sonoc, a buddy of mine picked it up in canada from a touring cuban group, it just has so much mojo, those caoba drums are something muy especial.

Just waiting to see what freight will cost me, will be the determining factor if I get it or not. I really shouldnt be thinking about it as Im saving every cent I can for my trip back to Cuba this year, but the idea of owning that Sonoc is eating at me! 8)

Marcelo,

Shipping this bad boy to Australia, I'm assuming you are in Sidney, will cost more than the quinto price. They quoted me $597, for a box 32x18x18 35 lbs. I will love for this bad boy to end up with you, as you're a working rumbero/percussionist, but shipping charges to "Down Under" are insane. You're going to be in La Habana soon, rumba groups like Yoruba Andabo, etc..... have these kind of quintos, not in the condition my is in, but they could restore it. Make sure is Caoba wood. I bet you could pick one up down in El Cerro or Jesus Maria in exchange for a pair of jeans or some Nike shoes. This bad boy, which has been played by Daniel Ponce and the late Puntilla, would love to be in your hands, but it will cost you over $1,000 when you throw in shipping.
Dejame saber, acereko.

Damn brother, who was that through? Matt had looked at shipping and was only going to cost around $130-$150 from his place to my local airport. I would then pick up from airport.
I have an old rumbero friend now living in Tampa, I will check with him if he knows of a cheaper freight forwarder.

The best quote I got was through FedEx International and that was $370 (an approximation). What about your friend in Tampa, I can ship the quinto to him. Let me know, as I have locals who want it, but you approached me first and you're a friend. Shipping in the Continental US will be $50.

Sadly and to sincerely great dissapointment I would need to pass on it based on the freight costs.   I want this drum so badly it hurts, but due to my saving plan for Cuba, I simply cannot afford the exorbitant freight cost.

I havent had a chance to speak to Matt either regarding what carrier he uses, have been snowed under with my day job, then band rehearsals and gigs, honestly aint had time to follow up on it. Still need to get it freighted across also.

Really saddens me to not be able to get it, I just hope whoever does pick it up will give that drum the respect and use it deserves.

Oye, lo siento chico. Bro the drum is a piece of work, tantalizing. The wood tones are amazing! That Omelenko rid himself of a drum and holds his Ritmo's tight says alot not only about Ritmo but O's hoarding abilities as well. :) I plan to drop it off my 3rd story balcony to test its craftsmanship...lol que te pasa asere? It's in good hands. Next time you swing by the Tropic of Cancer on the other side you might as well detour to Miami pa' conocer y rumbiar con la gente, y con el quinto of course.
