Gon Bops Bongos

Postby RitmoBoricua » Thu May 23, 2013 11:36 am

I was looking on ebay and saw this set that might be of interest to Gon Bops aficionados.
Seems to be all there and in pretty good shape for it's age.

You had to make me look at that and then look around to find these. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Gon-Bops-Vintag ... 41737799ea That would give me the matching tumba, a requinto, and an extra conga for my dream matching set. I could afford it if I wanted to go hungry and live in my car. :(

I think this shows once again how the fiberglass layer really holds these drums together even with splits starting. I also think they're asking too much for drums that have splits.

Them Gon Bops congas come up to about $533.00 per drum.
In contrast brand new California Gon Bops congas are in the
$1000 range per drum.

With the street price looking like $750 to $900.

I'm just a cheapskate, and spoiled. I got my pair off of ebay for $250 shipped. They looked ugly and no one wanted to bid on them while some nicer looking drums got the attention and $$$. Scarred shells, with mismatched hardware, and worn chrome on the rims. Different lugs on the same drum. Different size nuts on the same drum. Side plates lowered 1.5" on the quinto with the original holes open along with an LP stand bracket which I removed - I was really surprised how filling those small holes with oak doweling improved the sound. Had to run all of the lugs through dies to clean up the threads and new nuts. New American Bison heads. Just a few days ago I made some spacers or the lugs out of some pipe and now the lugs don't hang up like they used to so tuning is easier.

They're still ugly and I love them.

I ow a pair like these and they are great in my opinion. They are lite and comfortable to play and with the proper skins pop like fire crackers.

240 plus shipping, that's a pretty good price for the seller.
