It can be read and downloaded for free.

Thank you. :)

It is nice to know the dimensions of all these cajones. A problem is that you find so many different qualities of plywood - f. e. birch from Sibiria or from Finland - which have influence on the sound. And up to 1 cm thickness even the direction of grain has an effect on the response.

Yes, luckily a cajon is very inexpensive and easy to make.

And a compilation could become an endless undertaking.

Definitely unique. I like some of those designs. Do you have snares in any of them?

I have been wanting to make 1 or 2 cajones for awhile but have been way too busy with work and other stuff to take on any projects for the time being. I'll be looking back at this thread in the coming months though, once everything settles to "normal"!

It was a surprise for me as well, when I saw the result. I accompanied the work until the prime coat. The artwork was made by the kids autonomously.

In the raw wooden state two of the cajones with conical cut surface sound better than the other two. The biggest (ca. 38-40 cm diameter) has a very full bass tone and it is really inspiring to play on it. The next (32 cm diameter) did not have the same quality but became better after been painted. The one with 29 cm diameter is excellent and the smallest (26 cm diameter) does not sound fully - in my plans it should be only 28 cm high but the carpenter ignored it and made the pieces of same height than the others (ca. 68 cm).

The corpus of the bigger box-cajon is made of poplar (12mm). This makes it rather loud. But the sound-hole in the bottom seems not to be optimal. The backside is birch (6,5mm), glued completely onto the corpus, the frontside is also birch, but only 4mm and screwed.

The smaller box-cajon was just a try and had originally two beating sides. It should have been played sideways while lying on the thighs. But finally sombody built some skids "under it" (= on the better side). The corpus is from 9mm birch plywood. The beating sides are from birch - one 4mm and one 3mm (which sounded better).

@Chupacabra
No snares inside. For this we use normal afro-peruvian styled cajones.

Hey guys! currently building a Bajo cajon and am curious as to differences in sound regarding the opening
Ive noted 2 designs, the Yoruba Andabo one with the opening on the bottom and the Pancho Quinto one with the opening on the far side
How are the sounds and differences, pros or cons for both?
Id rather use one of these designs instead of the 'standard type' of hole deadsmack in the back center

A friend of mine's cajon was coming apart a little bit, so I traded my cajon for it and just fixed it up. It sounds really good, deep deep bass.

I read the more detailled description in your blog. My graphic shows two assisting actions, which help for the statics.

Hi all,

I love cajon too... here's a clip where I play one built by a percussionist friend of mine here in Israel, Shay Konforti. I don't know the dimensions of it, or how he built it, but I somehow like the sound of it better when it's in the horizontal position. There is another clip on youtube of me playing it in the normal vertical position.

Enjoy:
