Head Treatment (for congas) - Do you brothers know what it is?

I'm afraid we're talking about two different things where the skins are concerned!
The "head treatment" I'm referring to actually makes the 'white' cowhides turn a beautiful brownish color. But more than this, the heads are now treated and sound great. I seem to remember the process being referred to as 'pan y agua' or something along that vain!

There was one response on this thread which gave this process; rub manteca de corojo liberally on the heads, then place the drums outside for a couple of hours, this allows for the oil to get absorbed into the skin, but you must be careful of course to not have the heads tuned at all, otherwise they may tear.

yeah I realized the start of the topic you was refering to something about turning white heads, but sense someone mentioned the grease I thought I would ask about them stretching which I thought really wasnt good for them.

ah, the opposite eh? I don't really see anything different on those skins, otherthan the scum that has accumulated due to clamy hands? They are not buffalo heads from the picture.
Or are you talking about the brownish color?

No, I'm afraid that you still don't understand. The treatment is what the brownish color is, of course when one is playing they find the "sweet" spot and stick with it, that's where the darker coloration is (yes, there is going to be some affects from the oils in one's hands also). The manteca de corojo would also give it the look of being brownish in color if you had 'white' skins like what those seem to have been. The question I was raising is "what other ingredients are used to condition the skin in this process?"
