traditional maloya [which i think translates simply as music] set up. from left to right- sate, log drum, roule and cayenne. congas are also used nowadays in a style similar to some bembe patterns

the waves are incredible! just sticking one foot in the water is enough to feel the force of them.
Nice one for the map, we were based at st pierre for the first week [thats where the photos are], then travelled round the island to perform at different parades and festivals.
the volcano is also great, but the place for me was cilaos. Its a town way up in the mountains which is the site that the creole originally escaped to, living in caves to avoid the slavers. Its still a bit hairy to get to, but it puts the whole history of the place in context. theres a museum dedicated to the struggle of the creoles up there and this, combined with the natural power of the surroundings, makes cilaos a deeply moving place.
