Some advise and help

Hello guys
I was vey excited to see a site on congas.
I have started to play congas last September. I always had the passion for it but never had a chance to start. Now I am taking classes from a Turkisih guy, who had the chance to work with Alex Acuna and Luis Conte. Eversince I have started to play the instrument it has changed my life and became a way of life. In Turkey it is very rare to see people playing congas, there are very few. Mnay Turkish people play Turkish/Middle Eastern percussion instrumnets like Darbuka etc.
I have LP Salsa congas. There is so much I need to learn and want to learn about percusion. It very difficult to access to infromation like instructional DVDs or books in Turkey. Not even 1 bar / club to go and watch a good conguero. You even have to wait 3 months to order new congas because not many stores carry inventory. Basically it is not a well known instrument. But me and my friends get to gether once in a while and jam it.
Is there any DVDs and or other supplimentary materials that you guys can advise for me to have. I really want to progress my playing. what would your advises be for me? Are there any sites that i can see listen or watch some rythems and then practice?

don't fell so sory about your condition. i also have a common situation. in my country, there is no single people who really know about playing conga. thanks god I have chance to take a class with french percussion.
In my opinion, if you already mastered the basic conga technik, ed uribe's book( the Essence of afro cuban percussion) is the best starting points. he explain much about anything related to it. I have been used this book for one year, and everyday I take advantage from this book. i think you should try it. btw, its really easy to obtain this book. I bought from amazon in a good price.

Can you hook up with Okay Temiz in Istanbul? He plays great conga as well as ALL the Middle Eastern and Turkish rhythms. He was giving classes for people through a grant project administered by the Turkish government. Anyone who can play karsilama (in 9/8) on berimbau has gotta be.... Okay!!! Here's his website:

"Conga Virtuoso" by Giovanni Hidalgo is a super teaching video with wild playing, too. It is hard to find here and I saw it first time not long ago. Hope you can find it in Turkey.
Do you know of two amazing Turkish darbuka masters, Ahmet Misirli and his brother, Levent?
I don't know if they play conga, but their darbuka and dahola playing are out of this world. I was honored to have great times playing with them and their friend, Ismail, on saz.
