LP Performer Series Heads

I recently purchased a Quinto and Tumba in the LP Performer Series. While the construction seems to be high quality, I'm having difficulty getting the tones that I want (I am a beginner . When I did a bit of research, I found that other folks have had similar problems - and replaced the heads with Lp hand select heads. I'm not sure exactly where I can find these (I did an Internet search with no luck)...or how much it will cost to replace them?

Has anyone played with LP Performer Series drums and/or replaced heads on them??? How do I go about ordering some?

Any recommendation for me?

Welcome to the Congaboard! LP Performer Series drums were my very first drums when I first started out. IMO, for a beginner/intermediate conguero, these are very good drums at an affordable price.

I too thought that the original skins were not so good. I immediately had the skins changed to mule skin from JCR. The difference was very very noticeable. One thing though, I remember Cali of JCR telling me that the hardware on these drums, particularly the tuning lugs, were not "heavy duty" therefore, he strongly recommended a thinner skin as oppossed to a thicker skin. And he was right, because I would not mount thick mules on them.
Nothing wrong with the Performer congas, though. I have bought some for my school´s percussion group, after some time the skins are quite OK and you get decent sounds out of them.
Two tips:
Perhaps you wait a bit till the heads have broken in - or you wet them a little and remount them so that they can adjust better to the bearing edge.
Have you also tried tuning to different pitches? That might help finding the conga´s sweet spot.

I guess they are rather expensive. You might rather want to upgrade to another conga category one day...
