Chris:

it seems to me that you are feeling blocked by the pressure to "create" something "new". I find, you are already creating with every beat you are playing! And every beat is different the next time you play it. Looking at the epitome of creating, you wouldn't demand from a pregnant woman to bear anything new now, anything else but a human baby, would you? If a listener or a critic was becoming bored from artists who are re-producing what has been there before in one form or another, I think it would be his problem. Actually, it would be very hard to conciously try and create anything that hasn't been there in music before. So don't feel bad if you fill your solo with something you know. Just play the same thing, but give it beauty.

Improvising is composing while simultaneous producing something extempore. To compose means to "put together" in Latin. It talks about combining what's already there; the alchemistic formula of "Solve et Coagula" is the whole secret. But I suppose you have to do that in seclusion for yourself first, just playing around with different fragments and letting things happen. Work on it. Then, if you are getting restless, try to avoid the expectable. Again technical obstacles to remove. It needs time, so take your time. And don't try to play the world's best solo right away. Someday the entire "creative" process will be shortened to a minimum, and the technical obstacles are more and more eliminated through practice. And there you are: You play. Almost automatically, you will do something in a different, new, your own way, without intending or even realizing it.

And by the way, I don't think that there is any serious artist who feels that he should stop working and developing, because he is already able to play the ultimate solo anyway; so by starting to check out your own "combinations" you are only joining the club of the primo musicians on their pilgrimage to the ideal of perfection. You will be welcome!
