Left hand slap....

Postby cdldrum » Wed Jun 23, 2010 5:31 pm

Sirs,

Still growing conga player (most of the life on set)... am right hand dominant. Have noticed

that my right hand slap is much better then my left. From above , everything looks and feels

the same with both hands...but the recording does not lie. Have purposely attempted to "lead "

with the left to add more left slaps. Any suggestions, recommendations ? I know that this should

come with time... but want to practice correctly. Thanks.

Peace, Chas

I am certain that a left-hand action will never feel exactly the same as a corresponding right hand action. You have to find an equivalent way to achieve a balanced action between left and right.

If you have your drum (correctly) tilted at an angle, then consequently you must strike the conga in a slightly different way with your left than with the right hand to adapt to this position.

The ability to play a good slap stroke is an indicator for relaxation. Once you have found your way, chances are that your left hand becomes the better slap hand for some time.

Trying to consciously control your left hand is like searching in the wrong place. Drop your arm, turn your wrist and loosen your fingers for an accelerated motion. Listen to the results and sort out the successful tries to find direction. Breath calmly, normal. Be less pushy and more reactive to let your body learn.

(My 2 cents) - Thomas

Thanks to all...excellent advice...just what I was looking for. As a traditional

grip drummer the conga left hand has required a more patient approach ... relaxation

is a recognized problem (forearm / wrist fatique)...thank you Thomas. And Johnny....

I have found that repetition thru drills / exercises really help my type of learner. THanks.

Good stuff gentlemen... also good to know I'm not the Lone Ranger.
