Sonor Latino Series

Postby Warren » Wed Aug 18, 2010 6:32 am

Is anybody familiar with the Sonor Latino Series with fiberglass over wood? I'm looking at a conga and tumba in this series. They are a white sparkle. I've never seen a fiberglass covered wood stave conga before. Does anybody know anything about them? I can't find any information online.
Thanks

Are you sure that you aren't misreading that and are looking at fiberglass drums. My quick search didn't find anything with fiberglass coated wood. Siam Oak/ rubber wood with modern glues, especially multi-ply, wouldn't need to be fiberglassed.

A little bit about the fiberglassed Gon Bops here.

The fiberglass on my Gon Bops aren't all that thick. Looks to be a single layer of fabric with gel coat.

Oh yeah, forgot about that. The LP classics have a band of fiberglass inside the drum around the area where the side plates attach. I was thinking about drums that are completely covered on the outside like my the Gon Bops. I stand corrected.

Thanks for your comments. Keep 'em coming.
Robert, I did check the inside of the drum. There are clearly wood staves lining the inside of the drum just like you would see on any wood conga. The unfamiliar part for me was the addition of the fiberglass (or gel coat) on the outside. I believe it is a thin coat because I saw one drum from the series (which is white sparkle in color) and you could see where the glue on the wood seams had slightly discolored (bled through) the white finish in vertical lines. They are heavy beasts! Nice thick heads.
I've spent too much time online to find very little on Sonor Latino congas (most of which was on this site). It appears that Sonor is discontinuing conga distribution in the US hence I can get a great deal on the drums but it's nearly impossible to find anything out about them. I hate to buy them blind. They sound good, they seem to have been Sonor's premium line, the price is right BUT they're ugly as sin! -I'll have to limit the gigs to dark and smoky bars.
I appreciate all the help I can get on this. Thanks
Warren

I love my fiberglassed Gon Bops, beat up hardware and all. The buffalo/American bison heads help, and of course there very different animals than the Sonors.
