Hello everyone,

Just want to announce that I'm having my yearly concert in Beit Gertrude, a concert hall in En Hod, Israel, usually reserved for classical concerts. If you're in Israel, do try to make it.

I'll be joined by the amazing Arabian violinist, Amin, from Jaffa. We've performed together in the past and things could get pretty wild, great musical chemistry (we're both "stage tigers" as someone recently said).

Also there will be Yossi Cohen, a virtuoso guitarist and jumbush player (jumbush is something like a Middle Eastern banjo, probably originating in Turkey). Also will be Gili HaMeiri, a master zarb player (zarb is something like a Persian wooden darbuka, played mainly in Iran and the northern Mid East). Boaz Nikritin will be joining on flute and bansoor, and I will be playing dahola (bass darbuka), cajon and bongos (not all at once). :D

We have all performed as a quintet in festivals before and look forward to this concert. It will be mainly improvisation in a Mid Eastern realm...

I'm not the promoter, sorry for the late notice, but I hope and expect for the house to be packed even more than in years past. If you are not in Israel and don't have a lier jet to get here by tomorrow, I'll try to have the show recorded and available for listening in the future.

Wish me luck! Thanks so much.

Tickets are 40 shekels each (about $10 US).

Nope, I guess I'll never be a promoter...

Dear Yoni.
Sure wish I could make it to your show, but do break a leg!
F.Y.I., the axe in question is called cumbus in Turkish (although it IS pronounced "joombush") and is a 20th century adaptation of the traditional Turkish saz. It does share some organological traits with the U.S. banjo, most notabley the drum resonator. Because of the international distribution of the banjo, and it's acoustical superiority volume-wise, the African-derived technology of its resonator was absobed into a number of local lute traditions, including the Brasilian cavaquinho and the Turkish cumbus.
Could you please post some pictures from your program? I'm certain that a number of your friends on this site would be happy to see them.

Saludos,

Berimbau

Wow, thanks for the replies!!!

I am thankful and elated that our concert went beautifully, and had full attendance despite stormy weather.

Untaltumbador, much of the show was luckily recorded. Thanks for your interest! As soon as it is transferred to CDR I'll gladly send you a copy, gratis.

Gilbert, I'm sorry you couldn't come. I guess I wouldn't be able to see your concerts in Lebanon either. I hope this situation will change soon.

Berimbau, wow, are you an encyclopedia, or what? Thank you for your kind wishes! Now I remember seeing the word "Cumbus" engraved on some - cumbuses!

Some pictures were taken - I'll try to find them, get them scanned and posted on the forum.
Oh, just heard the first half was videoed... will try sometime to see if I can get a clip of it on the forum.

You all are great - I love this forum.

All the best,
yoni

Hi all,

Well, the first half of that show got videoed, haven't seen it yet, but things didn't start really heating up until the second half...

A good friend tried to record all on mini-disc, but the machine had some problem and kept stopping, so there were just bits and pieces recorded...

Talk about frustration - @#%*+!!!!! Why is it that the best stuff I do by far never seems to get recorded? It seems almost like a law with me...

Do any other of you players out there also have this kind of luck? I guess I just have to accept and be happy for every moment...

All the best,
yoni
