How many active musicians are in this Forum ?
How many play with bands ?

I play in a few bands. My main band is Urban Sun, a funk/rock kinda thing. I'm also in a soul/blues band called Otis Blues band, a P-funk/Prince kind of thing called Hokumfactory, and finally a 20 piece jazz/new music band called David Sanford and the Pittsburgh Collective.

I hope to someday get involved in a Afro-Cuban situation, but in NYC there are many bad players filling most of those chairs!

I have just finish 15 miniutes ago rehearsing 2 hour with the band. We have a gig this Friday & another next week.

Tfunk, your coment about bad musicians is true,that have to do by knowing or been friend of other musicians who would facilitate the entry of mediocres to play in bands. I remember a post about that subject.

Why do I ask about who is active & who is not,is because in another post about Dr Z,many posted their opinion but do they play or are they just fans ? I know Abakua,Jc,Onile & Raymond do play (can not remember everybody) but what about the others ?

Last 2 & a half years I have been playing in mostly all the Pubs down here,even in the annual Salsa Congress. Before, I have been a player in many bands since a long time ago.

I play in two bands right now, both of which have a gig now and then. I play drum set on those and bring some percussion once in a while. I gigged on congas & timbales with some funk bands in the 90's. Looking forward to some home recording to get my ideas into form. Respect to the professionals!

As a freelance percussionist I gig with various outfits,
But i do have my own World beat jazz group called " Global Groove"
that' s a fusion of everything, I also get called to play with a group called "the Funk Circle" this a been around vets playing R&B , motown , and just all around dance music.
Recently I have been called to play with a piano, vibes, bass and plus another percussionist mostly Latin Jazz and Exotica. And a world pop band funny to say called Exotica , where I play also with another percussionist. At times I get called by the steel drum bros to add to their soca, calypso, reggae. etc. Also at times I play with a guitarist and bass,the material is influenced by Pat Metheny and the Brazilian sound.

I can truly tell you that I have a lot of fun.

I did have a band a few months ago, 2 flamenco guitars and a woman who could sing in 3 languages, sadly the band broke up.
Lately I fill in the time sitting in on the weekly jazz jam down the street and recently I've been getting invited to rumba parties, but it's not the same.

About the time I joned this board I had 2 gig main gigs , and sat in for various people, freelanced for many others in town. Then I focused on 1 band :"thinking it might get somewhere". when that band broke up I kept freelancing and playing whatever came up.
About 2005?? I didn't post much here, due to odd day time job, and focus only on 1 band - Latin Obsession. We played many classic latin/jazz tunes.
Since about March this year I have stopped gigging to help a collegue of mine to make a demo, and other recording deals. That is done, and I am on the path for some more gigs. I played a few odd jazz gigs, but the tunes we played kinda sucked, so I'll be looking elsewhere
Locally, there may be some gigs, but San Diego is on the conservative side, so locals are lame as far as supporting local bands. PLus the club scene here is changing owners every few years making things even harder. However, since being out of the circuit for a while I will have to poke around again.
Caballo, I know you are starting this thread to call someone out based on that one thread about bashing Z, and I usually don't post much on those types of threads... or the ones that go to that temperament, but I'll just post my situation anyway . :;):

Tonio,yes indeed but I was not refering to the particular people that I know are active with bands or freelance,also is not to offend anybody. What I really do not like is when some members which I don't think have the background start to critique others who do have the background as in the post you mentioned. I know many of us have been and are playing since a long time .

I am working on solo stuff right now, mostly trying to figure out the live looping thing and sample some montunos that I can trigger via midi controller. I moved away from the Southwest where I was playing with 2 different bands. I'm trying to find a scene where I live now, but there really isn't much interest in the arts up here. I'm as inactive as I've ever been on the percussion scene, but I'm playing some more regular gigs on kit just to stay busy.

My comment about "bad" musicians, was misunderstood. I meant "bad" as really, really good!!! NYC has some of the best percussionists in the world. I just happen to live here, so I must accept how competitive it is. I'm just happy to be playing out at all. I have much to learn, my chops are nothing like most of the active percussionists here. My best talents are really big ears, and a good feeling for "band" playing, fitting in with different kinds of music, especially funk, soul, and rock.

i am a bongocero for a christian salsa music band. called orquesta ebenezer. we go to low income housing comunnities,parks,shopping centers and other churches and send the message of the Lord thru salsa music.i do play every wednesday, friday and sundays. I REALLY ENJOY IT AND I HAVE BEEN WITH THEM FOR 4 YEARS. GOD BLESS YOU ALL.

Played in 'garage bands' in the past. Since moving to a semi-rural setting I just sit in the odd gig with a local jazz band made up of music teachers. Not really a gig, but I recently found a group of kids at a local High School who do "African Drumming" with one of their teachers- I've been showing them some Conga tech and basic stuff.

My remoteness from a scene out here in rural splendor is why this forum is sooooo very important to me - and I'd wager to a whole lot of drum lovin folks like me far away from the big places.

Burke, I hear ya... I've not lived in a "city" on over 10 years. But the relationships I've built in my little communities have been strong like family.

Currently playing with one band. Also accompany friends when they ask me to play with them when they perform. None of this is Latin music, however. Just something that takes well to a percussionist's input.

But the real project is getting my wife's songwriting down and hopefully out to market somehow. That's a long journey...
