Here is an interesting clip. Just to prove having clave is not purely genetic and being Cuban is no guarantee that you can play clave.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ch2qtGr1 ... re=relatedThe singing is nice, and the drumming is too, but check out how many people try to get the clave to sound right. Listen to how raggedy it sounds, about 5 people try and no one really can hold a solid clean clave. El Gato is checking them out, he can play good clave but chooses not to take it away from them. Unlike NYC rumbas, there is no cursing, yelling, weapons pulled out, tantrums, bloodshed, or other guaperia, just a bunch of people taking turns trying to get it to sound right. No one really gets it right. It is generally in the right place, but it sounds "off", imprecise and wavering through the whole song. None of those guys would have lasted 10 seconds in Central Park on a "good" day.
Now here is how the clave is supposed to sound, for comparison. You may find the difference subtle, but listen how tight the clave is with the tres dos and vocals.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqkPaCWN ... =1&index=4I can't wait until this video comes out. This trailer is a monster. Check out the little kid playing clave at 0:32. I don't think it was overdubbed, look at the drummers' hands. I still say it's not genetic, prenatal maybe, but not genetic.
