Bongo,

Wow! I'm envious of all you out there who can afford such extensive drum/perc collections (and have the space and/or a mate willing to share the space with more drums). My 3 drum setup+djembe+bongos is puny in comparison. Bu then I think of those, who perhaps can only afford one drum or two, and am grateful....(but damn!! More drums!! )

What is so cool to me is this...A person may begin with "entry level" or even bargain basement/garage sale-level equipment. If the person has the heart for the music, people WILL ask "how are you making all those sounds with just one drum?" (or two or three...however good you get and how many drums you have will affect this).

Then, when you upgrade, your range of sounds grows! How cool is that? Still, the player is the key ingredient, and will make the cheapest drums sing to their potential if the player explores his/her own potential.

My friends find me hitting every concievable object, table, wall, pillar, support column, silverware, car bumber, old tire, old boot,....whatever...to see what music will come out of it! (my friends are very tolerant people)

I went to my son's gig at a coffee house and ended up playing his equipment case, the back of one of his guitars, and the hand rail on the stage as I melted into his act with a little percussion to spice it up. He welcomed me in, and the crowd did too.

The music and especially the musician, can make anything work IMHO.

God bless!

Ron,

Couldn't agree with you more. I try to squeeze every ounce of quality sound from my tubs, and as I do my repertoire of rudimentary skills expands and deepens

Your absolutely correct Bongoron. I've had some of the best jams with a soup pot and some brushes. I've been collecting since the 60's and I don't drive a new car every other year. my induldgence with percussion instruments still hasn't reached the value of a corvette or even a vintage Harley.
Musical equiptment can be a form of investment too "Good" gear always holds it's value and often appreciates(sp)

Well, I have collected my instruments over the years and I tried to focus on quality. What I can now proudly present as the setup I´m gonna play for the next time is mainly LP.
Older congas for children and assorted handpercussion is not included. Mind you, it´s my study room with barely any space at all...

Hey nice set up,
just a question or 2:
What kind of skin is on yr congas (they dont look like the originals). Is the sound much better?
Also what is attached to the footpedal?

cheers

Hi Pavlo,
The only skin that is still original is on the Matador conga. The LP Classic has got a thick cowhide which has improved the otherwise ringy sound of the thin skin that came with it. Well, and the mule skin on the Giovanni quinto is my latest. Did it just a week ago. And YES, reskinning makes all the difference, the sound is mellow, round and ... much better than before.
Cost me a few bucks, though.
20 years ago I experimented with a footpedal-holder combination. I was playing the drumset then, and a Rhythmtech Tambourin holder fit just perfect so that I could play either the tambourine or a large LP Rock cowbell with it. If you want I can mail a phote to you. Nowadays there are all kinds of footpedal holder, e.g. the LP Gajate or others. I just need it for time-keeping, especially with African patterns.
Cheers,
Michael
