Hmmm :? Playing crossed with the clave, not really my thing. As for 'sound', i see only merely what is expected of any serious conguero playing within a 'Latin' context.

Abakua,
How do you define crossed clave? To me, he is playing a pretty standard latin jazz pattern with an open conga tone where tres dos goes in a guaguanco, then 2 open tones on the tumba, all on the 2 side of the clave. I agree if you only play Tata Guines style marchas with the tumba on the 3 side, it sounds like the clave is crossed. I didn't hear him switch sides though, he stayed consistent through the whole song, apart from his solo. Johnny Rodriguez, a great bongo player with a conga style bien afinquado, was one of the originators of that pattern in the 70s, and it is used a lot in latin jazz. Last night I sat in with a very experienced NYC salsa band (with some guys from Pacheco's band) and played that pattern on one song and everybody liked it. What annoys me is when the conga player just plays a marcha and does not seem to pay attention on which side of clave he or she plays the tumba open tones, just switching back and forth. That throws the dancers, bass player, and other musicians off if they play or dance in clave. I didn't hear this guy do that. Once the groove is set with the tumba hits always on one side of the clave, though, either side can sound good and in my opinion can be in clave. What is your concept?

I simply like the sound of his congas and the groove he's playing sitting outside a restaurant. I'm not big on synthetic heads but he seems to get great tones out of them (to my ears).

I think the guy from Orlando has "mucho afinque" in his tumbao. Strong tasty playing, not flashy but in the pocket. You can see a strong Mongo influence, I like his left hand in the marcha, very fluid.

What he does with his left hand makes me think he's probably a strong bongo player too.

I don't know.
I saw the entire show on my local PBS station last night, and was so enamored of it that I searched it out online.

The headline says "watch the full film".
I just ASSumed the full film was there.
Looked at it today online and also got cut off at @13min.

Perhaps it's a teaser to get you to buy a DVD, as they sell DVDs of past "American Masters" programs.
PBS is usually a pretty straight shooter...what they tell you is what they give you.
So perhaps it's a glitch, or maybe they haven't uploaded all the digital data for the complete film.
Again, I don't know. I'm only speculating.

It's a shame because it really was an excellent documentary and portrait of Cachao.
Great old and new footage and great commentary by the likes of Oreste Vilato, John Santos, Emilio & Gloria Estevan, Arturo Sandoval & others.

The dominant message that comes through from all those who knew and spoke of Cachao....was of the humility of the man.

Look on your local PBS listings, maybe it will be on the schedule.
Online in the USA only, apparently.

FWIW,
Here is 10 minutes of out-takes from the film...called "Memories of Cachao".

Thanks, it's playing on the four PBS stations that I can pick up at enough times for me to catch it. Might have to hook up the stereo to the TeeVee. OK that's done - not as many inputs on 30 year old amps.
