Umm, it's so obviously been sped up. Why do you think it sounds so weird.

I suggest watch Dandy Rodriguez on Youtube. Dandy is the true source when it comes to bongo playing. There is no "afinque" with this guy.

Has the bongos around the 'wrong' way, and uses too many effects for my taste. As Omelenko says, all speed, flash and no afinque IMHO.

Not speeded up - just great speed. Indian tabla player. Excellent. Just doesn't translate well.

Totally different style though , hes not playing traditional martillo etc but i think the guy has serious chops and would sound great in certain situations .

You're exactly right, this guy is playing in a flashy context specifically for this short youtube video that displays his unique style.
I'd say overall an enjoyable and fun video.

It's presumptuous of someone to say he has no serious band chops unless they've seen him play in that specific context.

I can understand where omelenko is coming from , but it think it misses the point tbh .The guy is playing bongo with lots of different influences from other percussion styles . He has some serious chops but i wouldnt imagine he plays traditional cuban music much .

There is a phrase in the accounting profession, "substance over form". I don't see much "substance" in this guy's video. Aside from Dandy in Youtube, there is Armando Peraza, Jimmy Delgado, Anthony Carrillo, Papo Rodriguez, David Romero, Michito Sanchez..... The bongo' is an Afro Cuban instrument and "martillo", with modifications is the standard and can be applied to a wide range of music. An Indian tabla player is great at that, bongo playing needs "substance", "afinque" and "mazacote", more meat and less potatoes. I don't see evidence of these factors in this video.

Johnny Dandy Rodriguez, bongo solo, about 30 years ago. In the company of Patato and Tito.
Bongo solo 2009 with Orestes Vilato and Eddie Montalvo. This is what "afinque" on bongos is all about.

Mucho respecto pa unos de me favorito bongoceros Jhonny Rodruiguez. But on a different note, thought this was a cool video. Representing Puerto Rican percussion,
