Cesar on bass, Ben on electric guitar. Ben, of Australian origin, a master of the guitar, has studied tres, quatro and tiple very heavilly and dominates these instruments with ease, a great friend, wonderfully humble person and incredibly gifted guitarist.

Hey amigo,

Abakua those are nice pics man! Looks like you guys had a great time! Shame to hear that your Meinl's still need some work on but that's just a minor detail compared to the music, fun and joy you gave to your audience at the Basement in Sydney! Looking good, man!!

Happy Drumming!

Abakua, great pictures you have been posting lately (I've spent the whole afternoon and night updating myself with the posts). It seems like you guys are having a lot fun down there in Australia. I have two questions for you: from the pictures I guess that your timbalero (and the bassist also) is Colombian. What's his name?

I'm just curious about the other one: I live in Colombia, and we obviously dance salsa, and the other latin rhythms. How about Australia? Do they (people in general) know how to dance salsa? My guess is not, but I might be totally wrong.

Any way, I'll keep on with my updating.
Good luck (and keep posting pics!)

Hey dvon! :)

Firstly: re the timbalero and the bass player, yes they are brothers, but are Chilean. Our timbalero likes to wear a different soccer jersey for every gig. That night was Colombia's turn.

Secondly: re Salsa dancers etc, there is a big salsa scene here, and always has been since around the 60's and 70's.
So yes, people here dance regular salsa, along with rueda, casino etc etc.
In 2001 a young couple from Sydney qualified for some big salsa congress dance comp/expo in NYC, they ended up taking first prize!

FYI, there's also a large population of Colombianos, Equatorianos, Peruanos, Chilenos, Argentinos, Costa Riqueños, Panameños, Cubanos, Urugayos,Bolivianos etc etc.. Not as large as you would see for example in the U.S, but there are many, so there is always a busy latin scene here.
:)

Glad you liked the pics dude! You can see some more in the follwing threads:

Abakua,

Thanks again for the pics. Sorry, but I got lost with the video clips you were going to upload through Windhorse's web page. Did that finally happen? Can you- or anyone else out there- give me the link, or can you send them by email?

On the latin scene in Australia, that sounds great! I would think twice if I were to dance a salsa song with and Australian girl, though. Jejeje, just joking. Even though there are some regularities when talking about dance abilities between different countries and regions (for example here in Colombia, the women from Cali are the best dancers, by far), I must say that I once met a Cuban conguero who was completely unable to dance salsa!! That was so unexpected!

I just hope I'll be able to dance with a Puerto Rican girl (What do you think Frank? Is that a well earned fame?). I met one yesterday, but she denied to dance salsa! But then, I guess I'll finally meet, and dance with a boricua girl in NYC where I'll be living for the next 5 or 6 years.

Any way Abakua, thanks for posting those pics.

Abakua I forgot: can you please tell me what does
"Okobio Enyenisón, Awanabekura Mendo/ Núnkue Itia Ororo Kánde Efík Ebutón/ Oo Ékue" mean? In what language is it? Is that Yoruba? I find it absolutely beautiful. Do you- or anyone else- know what does "Yényere Guma" means or is? I love a song I heard in Cachao's Cuba Linda that's named like that.

Has anyone heard it? By the way, what rhythm is that?

Good luck!

ABAKUA
Man I like what is happening in the pictures! I like to play the tumbadoras but I also love to dance a good salsa tune. It looks like you guys have the place on fire.
It reminds me of New York City in the Sixties.
