Conga headwear. - Why do percussionists wear hats???

This one is from this year's (January 05) Bacardi Festival in Sydney, crowd of approx 6000 people per night, we performed here every night for the last week (goes for 2 and a half weeks) and closed the Festival, was awesome, the closing night was also my birthday, so it was extra hard partying!

I sometimes wear a white or black bandanna under the straw hats because the inner elastic from the straw hat often leaves grooves that look like sheet music on my forehead!
I normally wear this one below bearing Ernesto's image underneath when I wear my red Kangol.

here's the one Diceman saw in the other thread where the idea for this thread came from!

This one was taken recently at Channel 9 studios when we performed live to Australia on a morning program similar to NBC Today. (I should have this video online in the next few weeks - will post it up for y'all to check out one of the bands I play with here in Sydney)

Sorry. Che was not a scumbag and I take offence to your comments. As for it being fashion.. Thats the last reason I would wear it.

Che does not represent opression. Do you forget the political corruption and military situation which existed in his time in many of our (latin) countries?

You speak of 2 different moments in time.
The world was a different way back then, with many cause/effect factors in that time which led to a series of events in time.
Those events subsequently led the path to what we see today and its effect on its people by interior and exterior governmnet decisions, again a different moment in time.

Why is everyone trying to get out? Political leadership not conforming to US govt. demands, people and their economy suffering as a result of that same blockade and its leader not conforming to the terms to disban the blockade.

Che was a hero of the people for the people.

I care not for his politics nor views of socialism. Far from it, I try not to involve myself at all in politics.

It is his ideals and passion for equality amongst people without predjudice that I admire and his courage to take a stand and fight for your beliefs. A man who took to the injustices of the simple people and joined their fight for equality.

On a semi-related note ... how about wrist and/or head bands?

In warmer venues the full hat keeps too much heat in for me.

Also ... the wrist bands are perfect for that "quick wipe"
of the brow. Anyone else ??

Does that mean you play sax as well as congas?
Sax is my first instrument but I just fell in love with those skins when I started, so a question-- do you find that coming from a melodic background, you approach the congas in a melodic way? How has it affected your approach to percussion?

Thanks for the question my new friend. I had been playing sax professionally for about 5 years. In between sax solos I found myself just standing there while the rest of the band played on. I wanted something to do so I went to a drum shop and bought a pair of CP's (man was I cool) and a video. The rest is history because I fell in love with the rhythms I was learning. I've been studying Afro-Cuban and Brazilian percussion since.

I'm not sure i play congas melodically, I am very intrigued with tuning correctly and tonality. I can tell you this for certain, playing congas and learning folkloric rhythms has had more impact on my sax playing than otherwise.

Yes, my prime reason for learning percussion was to improve my rhythm reading, but my sax playing got totally hijacked by it. It has had an influence on my sax playing and reading so i guess it works both ways.
Also good to hear someone who does Afro Cuban and Brasilian percussion, I love both approaches and use them all the time separately or fused.
