Shipping drums overseas - Is there a way that's cheap and secure?

Smejmoon, can you tell a bit more about your experience? I'm interested, because I too soon might have to take drums by air. How long was the flight? Did you untune it before the shipping? If not then that might be the cause.

I think that hotness and dryness are conditions that can cause drumheads to split, so I assume that shipping by plane might be safe. The cargo space of airplane might be rather chilly (air is very cold up there and they wouldn't bother heating the cargo space as much as the passenger area).
Not sure about the moisture, though. If it's cold and moist, then it's bad for the wood, if the flight is long.

I did untune it. Packing was ok, It was in my soft bag, with some extra cushion and then inside professionally packed cardbox. Shipping together with customs took about 3 weeks, but there should be just about 12 hours of air travel.

It cracked when I tuned it up afterwards. Maybe I was too excited seeing my drum after so long, but the skin was pretty fresh, so I don't thing overthightening was the case :)
