Johnny or anyone..did Mongo ever complain about his hands or arm/shoulders, with the intensity that he plays all the time ou think he might get some kind of injury...considering know people get hurt just by keyboarding..i did have a chance to see him in the 70s at Oberlin College, Oberlin, Ohio..an inspiration..

Well Mongo had hand problems and from what i heard he had his nerves 'deadoned' in his hands by operation..and he also had to have a hip replacement because of lifting the drum and pounding down on it over his career...Omelenko can also chime in about Mongo and his playing problems...

In 1950, while touring with Perez Prado on a bus through southern Texas, the bus got into a head on collision. Mongo was seating next to a Puerto Rican lady dancer that died on the spot. Mongo's leg and hip were broken, while in the hospital they were going to amputate Mongo's leg. A really dark black man that spoke no English. Thanks to the singer, he explained that Mongo was a Cuban musician on a visa, then they spared the leg. Perez Prado left Mongo stranded in Texas, it took him a year and a half to recoup. Mongo became addicted to Morphine during this time, because of the pain. He returned to NYC in 1951 and joined Tito Puente's band on Vicentico Valdes recommendation. Mongo always had leg and hip problems. He had hip replacement surgery in 1993.

lol old school congueros have been telling that lie for an eternity. Anga was the one who told me its an ancient joke held by the old timers so they can have a laugh at the younger guys coming up. (also something we brought up while in Cuba) funny story.. but for another time.

Anga, who spent a life time studying with Tata told me how Tata made him swear to not tell the other guys!! Tata never let Anga urinate on his hands. Just as I do not let my students do it to themselves either, now for the little smart ass know it all punks whos mouths & ego is bigger than their heart and come to me for tips, I tell em, piss on your hands bro, makes em tough. bahahahahahahaha.

I respect Mongo, Peraza etc, they did much for the music, culture and the drum, however never been into them.

Eso de mear en las manos es jodedera. The pissing on the hands bit is probably bullshit. I never did it. Mongo talked about it, but then he smiled. What I did do was apply "manteca de corojo" to my hands before the gig and play with that lubrication, it provides protection and lubrication to the hands as well as the skins. It does have somewhat of a peculiar ordor, but is without a doubt the best lubricant for conga skins and dried up hands with cuts.
