What I do notice from the photo that Atala' has posted is that he's not sitting with his back up straight, he's kind of slouching; thus by
puting pressure on the kidneys, one cause of blood in your urine.
Atala' keep in mind to sit up straight.

I have been thinking about this problem with blood in the urine, and don't have any answers, but I did want to share a thought which may be worthy of some consideration.

Everyone who sings really needs to hear themselves sing in the monitors, or they tend to try to sing too loud and can strain or injure their voice.

Maybe it would be of equal value to a hand drummer to make sure that there is enough conga, or bongo, or whatever in the monitor so that you don't feel as if you need to play as hard. This might be a way of protecting oneself from damage to the hands and/or the kidneys.

It is just a thought, but I'm going to be thinking about this the next time I'm being miked into the mix.

I agree, monitoring is very important at live gigs. When you're well miked, you always have to remember that you don't need to play loud, just play as you were at home. That came to my mind after I did some videos of live performances. I was always hitting the congas very hard at solos, but when I talked to our technician, he said, he had to turn me down at that part to keep an equal sound.

Hi all,

I also don't want to "lecture", but here's my take on two of the things discussed here...

As for peeing on hands, I've not yet tried it for skin treament in 40 years of playing, but I DID pee once in bandages to be wrapped around my hands and wrists - a healer's treatment for some severe tendonitis I had years ago. The bandages were also smeared in Dead Sea mud (what a mix!) and seemed to do the trick for the sore wrists, which I needed back in quick shape for an upcoming tour.

For hand skin treatment/toughening I've had by far best results with Corn Husker's Lotion, mentioned by Bataboom in 2nd post here, and by me at other times.

Blood in urine may result from a number of things, but killing off too many red blood cells in hands by banging too hard too long sounds like one serious factor to me, regarding hand drummers.
If you type "anemia from bongo playing" into a search engine, some articles come up that go with that view.

Whatever, it seems we deal with the most potentially dangerous musical instruments out!

Health & happiness to all.

Yoni
