TO TheOne, Good job! I can only second Congamyk's comments. Your well on your way to becoming a heavyweight.

To Johnnyconga, Again, I can only second burke's comments. Mr. Versatility. Great video. While watching I thought how it would be nice to see you and Yoni on the same stage.

Now for a video!

AfroCuba de Matanzas

This Video blew me away. The energy is incredible. I read some years ago in the rec. music afro-latin newsgroup - I think, about a rumba video where someone crawls up a wall. I wonder if this is the one. He doesn't actually crawl the wall, but at one point it certainly, for at least a second or 2 looks as if he were.

Changuiri,

I'm not exactly sure. I visited Cuba in 1993 and Lucumí at the time looked a lot younger than on this video clip.

1995 seems right to me.

This is the best rumba video I have seen on youtube (or anywhere, really) in a long time:

<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/7_OoShNfilk"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/7_OoShNfilk" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

Román Diaz on tumba, Tonito Martínez on tres dos, Angel Vila on quinto, Lázaro Rizo (guagua and vocals), Guillerme "El Negro" Triana (clave and vocals) Mario Dreke "Chavalonga," (vocals). Sweet.

What is Lucumi up to these days? I think the last thing I saw him on was Afrekete...?

When I last spoke with Mayito Rivera of Los Van Van, 'LUCUMI' was still viviendo el Habana, selling plumbing supplies, pipes etc to try and make a $$$
At the time he wasnt up to much musically, his playing however is as full of fire as ever though.

Guarachon,
That really is a great clip. Reminds us of how clean, unhurried, and beautiful rumba can be. The rumba we usually hear (and play!) is usually so rushed, so overplayed, and so ego-driven, with everyone trying to show off their chops, that we forget how nice it can sound if the focus is on the song, not on each drum part. That was a guaguanco, not a yambu. When was the last time you heard or played a guaguanco at that tempo? It doesn't happen in NYC. The quinto wasn't talking over the singers, everyone played soft and you could hear everything. Aprenda de los mayores.

right on the money Jorge...there is a part in that clip where the camera moves from the singers to Roman Diaz on tumbador, and Roman Diaz basically is pointing the camera back to the singers because Chavalonga has just started singing...for the singing alone its great...the drumming is fantastic...Lazaro Rizo, has a great voice...btw
