See the thing with bongo is, if he was just posting MP3's, you know that would be a different thing, I think we would all have different reactions...

but you know bongo, your posting videos, where everyone not only hears your music, but see's your technique on the conga's.

and since this is a conga forum.......well......

I know if I played like that in Carlos Aldama's class I would get corrected very quickly.

But then again your in Corvallis, and having gone to school in Eugene and lived there for 7 years, I can sympathise with the situation there.

Anyways I wish you all the best, I can see you obviously enjoy your playing a lot, that's probably what matters most.

Hi all

Now I feel kind of bad since I was the first to give a discouraging comments on the vids...

At least the guy is trying and shows some independance techniques that show some work.

I could understand if it was your first week of ever touching a conga. But 35 years? I somehow find it hard to believe.

Seriously, I would encourage you to take some lessons.
You are deceiving yourself with what you play in those clips.

Here is a close up of my hands on the Skin on Skins.
You may not like it, too bad.

What I play is deliberate.
I play how I like.

Bongo, you have every right to play what you like and the way you like. I find it strange though that you subsequently insist on posting this all over the place for other to see, because you will definitely be commented upon.

To be frank, I admire your 4 limb independence, but watching how you play the Congas is just too painful to endure so I exit within 30 seconds.

I am also not sure about using the Congas in a circus act ensemble, but as you say this is your free choice.

If you insist on posting you're going to get good and bad comments, a bit strange to then say "FU" at the constructive ones.
Otherwise just post and turn off the comments on youtube and request no comments on this forum.

btw I admire you skins and I am in Brisbane right now and looking at bringing back a Didgeridoo to the USA as a souvenir but a decent size one is not cheap at $250+

Bon Chance!

I think after an hour of warm-up and practicing any kit drummer (with no conga technique or understanding of Latin rhythms) could do that. It's simply "patty-caking" the arms and legs in a (somewhat) rhythmic pattern.

Besides the absence of technique and conga tones, it (laughably) doesn't even sustain or maintain a basic beat or groove.
The timing constantly changes and doesn't groove. The didgeridoo sounds good! Maybe that's his calling in life.

Bongo, after 25+ years have you considered donating your drums, toys and camera and just playing didgeridoo exclusively?

I've been listening to these guys and other Japanese jazz groups lately.
Japanese music is kind of underpromoted in my opinion

What do you think of them and their percussionist?

"Anorak", what do you do, play your congas while trainwatching?

He might have a dodgy left hand, I did'nt watch it that closely, I got into them by listening to their songs on cd's.

Still sounds good to me, especially for a straight jazz setting. I wonder what the percussion scene is like in Japan?

The only other Japanese percussionist I know plays in that band Ozomatli.

edit: yeah, his hand does kind of have an unusual shape there does'nt it? like he's doing a manoteo kind of thing with a hand shaped for a slap?

The Japanese love Salsa- old school stuff. The most modern Salsa band was Orquestra De La Luz back in the -80's-great stuff. The conguero was Gen Ogimi with great chops. They since have disbanded, I believe.

I'm sure there are many more.

JC is adding extra text "........" to the link when posting it.

The correct link is: http://youtube.com/watch?v=EtHbrwqLJnM

Nice variation to the guarapachangeo hybrid form.
