Changuito In A Rumba Setting!

This is a first for me, seeing Changuito in a rumba setting. I believe he mentions in 'Evolution Of The Tumbadoras' that he didn't attend many rumbas when he was coming up. Can someone say something about the other two gentlemen. I've heard the names before, but don't know their history. Thanks!

Appears to be a great performer, but it sounds like ka ka, I couldn't bear listening to it.

Yeah, he has really nice swing, solid timing, y toca con mucho sabor.

A little off topic, but following up on Tonio's comment, the bad sound is not his playing, the mic, or even the room. It is digital clipping that comes from recording with the gain on the recorder set too loud. The sound level is higher than the recorder can handle, and it clips the tops and bottoms off of the sound wave, and the digital electronics create a horrible noise. Clipping is very easy to do when recording percussion, and it destroys the sound quality much more than clipping with an analog recorder. Don't worry, though, if you keep your volume down it won't damage your ears, just listen to what he is playing and try to ignore the sound quality.

When you record, always try to do a sound check at the loudest volume you will play, and set the gain so the peak volume NEVER gets to the maximum on whatever kind of meter you have. For those of you with meters on your recorders, clipping can occur as soon as you hit 0 dB, which is the maximum acceptable level. Setting the record level so peaks are at -6 dB or -12 dB generally works the best. Even hitting the maximum once can destroy that part of a recording.

Yup , it was totally clipping. Must be from the crappy camcorder used? But then again, youtube and myspace uses a crappy algo birate compression. Do they limit what sample frequency you can upload?
That is why I don't venture out to those site too often, they sound like crap. Abakua's video compared the linked ones sounded good.
But when things are recorded and streamed in low resolution, I can't bear to listen. Watching is cool, but isn't "the sound" half of it? What good is to have media of music oriented material if it sounds like crap? Just to post and say-hey I can do this?

Sometimes you have to tolerate the superficial details like crappy sound quality to get to the real essence of the art. This guy Bernardo Lopez can really play, toca con sentimiento y compas, it is worth enduring the poor techonology, at least once, to hear him. Check it out again at low volume, keep in mind its just clipping and it won't damage your ears!

Nice one, Marcelo, thanks for showing us that clip.

I am impressed these days with all the new advancements in "improvisation" on congas, but I wonder if half these cats could play in a band or if they ever have.. . .just a thought. . .I say that for example I could tell u that Daniel Ponce a straight up rumbero(and friend of mine) which he is, had a very hard time being able to play with bands and actually stay in clave. . but he could rumba and improv all day long. . .. .Johnny Conga. . . .

I'm feeling JC a bit on this one, these guys strike me as Conga soloists, like a piano soloist...........and there is nothing wrong with that, in a way it seems like an emerging form of the art of conga playing, those that play in a group or band and guys like these (maybe started by Anga and Giovanni?) that play beautiful conga music solo style.

I don't know, it's just a thought, these guys might rock in a band for all I know...

but the extended solo conga playing on multiple drums really seems like it's a new genre to itself right now...

Years ago a good friend of mine, one of my first didjeridu teachers, and I were talking about a another didjeridu player. I was going on and on about how he was so amazing, and what great chops he had. Then, he said, "Yes he can do that really well,, but it's musical masterbation."
That really affected me, and I wanted to back up the guy that I thought was so good. But, I thought about it more and more, and went back to that statement probably thousands of times over the course of several years as I developed my playing style and played with more and more different musicians.
I knew exactly what he meant by that, and I could see that show-off part of myself that wanted to be the center of attention and might detract from the overall musical sharing experience of playing with others..
I always focused on having "BIG ears" and sure hope that you others find yourself in a situation that teaches you the importance of big ears as well.
So, I know just what you guys mean, but on the otherhand, those one man performances played so masterfully on multiple congas, to me, are like a Jimi Hendrix guitar solo to a 70s hipi. They stand alone as some of the most impressive displays I've ever seen.
Whether or not they play in a band,, well that's up to them. The individual makes the choice of being willing to give up some individuality and ego to play with others, or build it up to the maximum to play alone.
They're certainly two different paths..

When I was in London in the Summer I saw this show called Havana Rakatan.
I got talking to the master percussionist backstage (his name escapes me right now) he lamented the fact that a lot of the young guys in Cuba play some amazing mf timba stuff but struggle to hold a basic cha cha cha for 5 minutes!

The really great players can do both, which is what makes them SO amazing. In the case of guys like, Giovanni, Samuel Torrez, Pedrito Martinez and other super advanced players, they can and do both... have band chops, and unbelievable solo skills.

That is not to say that other players that don't need or want to be so advanced at both, but concentrate on band playing are less important . As we all know, it is a great asset to have big ears, and play well in different band situations.

It's all great, and amazing to me.
