Oz, I didn't notice your post until just now when I was checking out Isaiah's beautiful new LPs - Those sure do look like those beautiful Volcano Percussion drums from that guy in Hawaii..

Mine are Mahogony Sols hand-made by Akbar the drum maker
But, I'll add that they sound FAR better than they look!

Winhorse: I thought those were sol congas but i really wasnt sure. Sol congas have pretty unique rims and hardware.

Isaiah: Your Tumbas look sweet, nice set up.

This pretty much all the stuff I've collected over the years. My recent addition include a complete set of set of congas from moper'c cubano series.

enjoy

Oz

OZ! Beautiful drums!!!
- side note - looks like you're pulling the crap out of the middle drum head!! Did you go low on tension when mounting that one compared to the others?

And those mini timbal look really interesting! I'll bet they really scream!

Winhorse: The heads came premounted and the conga which is the one see pulled the most, came with the head uneven. the angle of the photo doesnt help either, its actually not as bad as it looks. Moperc is sending me a replacement head that should arrive soon.

the mini timbale have a pitch kinda like bongo and have the same repique feel as well. but, mostly my kids are the one's that use the mini timbale. its a lot of fun to mix them up with the full size timbales.

Oz,

The mopercs are beautiful and very traditional looking drums! Just wondering what you think about their sound, tone and perjection qualites as compaired to other drums you have heard and / or played. Most mass produced drums today are made with asian oak rubber wood or american oak. The moperc cubanos are made with maple wood which is reputed to be an excellent tone wood. One comment I heard from another owner of the cubanos was that they "play bigger" than other drums. Meaning they are very responsive. He also stated that you could even get away with using smaller sizes if money was an issue and tune them lower and still get the same volume as bigger drums from other makers. Also, are they heavy to carry? Please share your review of your morpercs.

Thanks,
Facundo

Their sound blows any mass produced conga by far, and thats a bold statement cosidering the fact that i havent played them all. The projection is very clear and loud, almost as if they were mic-ed. the tones are crisp with virtually no unwanted overtones. the tunning was something that i had to get a little used to, maybe because i wasnt used to the cow hide and the difference in the sound of the wood. but, the tunning has to be very precise in comparison with mass produced congas that i have played.
I cant compare them to any other custom congas because i have never played any other custom conga. but, if i had to compare them i would start comparing them with juniors, mathews and the JCR's
one downfall is that they are heeaaavy. i rarely transport these but, I had to buy bags with wheels to facilitate moving them around.
I normally play and practice with 3 at a time and i use the quinto as conga and the conga as tumba and the tumba as a super tumba.
when i first started playing them it felt like i was slaping solid concrete, that cow hide does not budge much. once i figured i didnt have to hit them as hard to produce the same sound as mass produced conga my hands were ok. LOL
I am very pleased with everything about them, the sound, craftsmanship which is very apparent just by looking at them.
i pretty much have been glued to them since i got them delivered in august and will remain glued for some time. :D

Hey Oz, that is a great set up you have with those Mopercs. Congratulations, you must be in conguero heaven with those! That's a set you can keep forever and they will be a family heirloom.

Oz,

Thanks for the feedback. They sound like fantastic drums to have with weight being the only drawback. Owner feedback is really important because buy drums over the internet without being able to test them for yourself is a real leep of faith given the cost charged by the few boutique drum makers. I look forward to trying them out one day.
