Hello QG, That is not mano secreta. Simply heel tip + tone. Its basic exercise no# 1 for any conguero.

Found this interesting clip of "Peanuts Taylor" on some ECHO TONE congas from 1964. He actually plays some congas at about 3 min into the clip. Not really a a big fan, but he got some speed and is interesting to watch nonetheless.

Seen in the clip is one of Sydneys young up and coming lions, Steve on Timbales, taking a solo.
Im on cencerro/bell, I had just swapped over from Congas for this track onto bongo/bell. Steve also plays some mean congas, very similar to Giovanni's technique.

ABAKUA, I thought the heel toe movement was part of mano secrecto, especially when he was at the rim getting an open tone with the fleshy part of the palm followed by the tip with the fingers in the same downward stroke. I recall seeing a video of someone demonstrating that technique, and referring to it as mano secrecto. Hey, thanks for that Peanut Taylor vid. I had asked about him here some time ago. I saw him back in the eighties, and had mentioned him as one of the highlights of my vacation. An older acquaintance response was, "oh is he still there? I saw him years ago" , now I understand her reaction. That's is a very old show, brought back a lot of memories. Everyone that I know who has gone to the Bahamas lately has gone to Freeport. Anyone know if he's still around, and doing that show, and the guy who did the female impersonator act also. That was the first time I had seen a professional conga player, so needless to say I was impressed. I see now that he does not have the modern classic Cuban technique, but he makes the drum speak and is a consummate showman. Again, thanks!

Here is another one from the same gig in the clip above. Here, we are performing Hector Lavoe's "Aguanile" (Marc Anthony/El Cantante movie version) as part of the tribute show in honour of the 70's NYC salsa era.
The band had 1 rehearsal for this show and a last minute change on bongo, we couldnt get a bongocero, so we had a last minute fill in by a begginer bongocero who is actually more of a timbalero.

Hey guys,
I ran into the video below on YouTube and found it to be quite interesting, an instructional DVD on Cuban Rumba. I've never heard of this guy before but he sure seems to know what he's doing. His performance and teaching credits look pretty impressive too! Does anyone here have this DVD? If so, please direct me on where I can purchase this.
