Onile, if the video isn't doing them justice then clearly they are smoking because they sound sweet to me, I think Matt is on the march. Beautiful...

I hope that you are all well and blessed this holiday season!

Okay, so here is my first video posting with my new Matthew Smith Ritmos. The video quality doesn't do justice to the true sound of the drums, unfortunately it's all I have at the moment!

I'm having a blast with them though!

Suave!

Onile!

My latest video! Sound check - Alicia Keys band, conga solo

Postby ABAKUA » Sat Dec 13, 2008 6:07 am

I been hanging with Pablo Batista & Freddy (percussionist & trumpet for Alicia Keys) last few days, really nice humble guys, had backstage passes to last nights concert, was awesome, I love Alicia Keys and already had tickets, but ended up watching the concert from the side of the stage, best seats in the house! 8)

Anyway, here is a short clip I shot during their sound check:

I later got to play his rig during the sound check, a real honour. Once I get all the footage resized etc will upload more etc...

I believe my Matthew Smith's - requinto and tumba are from a set previously owned by Pablo Batista, he sold the set of 5 when Matt made him a new set as far as I know.

I couldn't help but notice the Remo synthetic heads (looks like Fiberskyn Tucked) that Anga is using--on all 3 tumbadoras.

I'm not sure about that Manny, they look like his regular Toca's to me, it may be the toca logo on them that looks in this video a little like the remo logo. I took him to be a skins guy, although I'm sure he could have made a upturned trashcan sound great.

That´s right,No.2-1820, I have never seen Angá play his Tocas with plastic skins. I once was lucky to see him play live, otherwise I have grabbed any vid I could find of our true master.
You may well say the last sentence again! He lives on and still RULES!

You know I think of Anga every time I sit at my congas, I feel we are very privileged within our conga and musical circles to have known of him, if I mention him to friends outside of these small circles of interest they have almost certainly never heard of him which is a tragedy. He was of particular inspiration to me because I share what I perceive as his complete open minded approach to applying the congas to music while being grounded in the disciplines and traditions of folklore. I will practice my Guaguanco and tumbao's and then unwind with some reggae or instrumental hip hop. When I listen to his Echu Minga and the previous album with Cachaito it reminds me to try them with anything, not everything works but sometimes it's very rewarding, I mean who else would have brought a turntablist into the studio to record with Cachaito (corrected), one of the foundation composers of Cuban music as we know it ?

Echu Mingua has to be in my top 10 albums. I play it for people sometimes, and usually they don't get it.
They tell me it sounds like I'm playing 2 albums at the same time, which is of course why I like this
album so much! 8)

btw Barrie is Cachaito not Cachao on those albums.

Cheers BNB, for some reason I think I thought Cachaito was his correct name but he was known as Cachao almost like a nickname or a shortening.

I bounce between those two albums in preference, with the Cachaito just edging Echu Mingua most of the time.

B,

You could be right. I just surfed Toca's website and checked where they stamp their logo on their heads. And, sure enough, it's about the same spot where Remo stamps theirs, particularly on Toca's higher-end drums. (Many others, as we know, such as LP, stamp theirs in the middle.)

Reviewing Anga's video on YouTube, it's still hard, though, to tell whether the logo is shaped like a shield (Toca's) or a crown (Remo's).

I guess the other reason why I thought Anga's heads could be Remos is because of the distorted sound of the recording rather than the warm, drier sound of animal skins. Blame the low sound pressure level (SPL) of the built-in camcorder mic, I suppose.

Thanks for the correction,
