Here is a group of Puerto Rican rumberos performing at a function paying homage to el gran Angel "Cachete" Maldonado!
Sorry about the video quality, but listen to the technique of the quinto player, he is rippin' it apart!

Suave!

You weren't joking. The singing was really good also. I liked the harmonizing. I'm really partial to Cuban rumbas but, these guys are really good.

I have become a huge fan of "Panga"..here he is in 1992 playing what i believe is the beginning of what became "Guarapachangeo"...he ends it on the tumbadora the same way its done in Guarapachangeo on the last two hits of the 3/2 rumba clave, second time thru the clave, a 4 bar pattern.."JC" Johnny Conga

I have that one on my favorites, when I first started playing I set that as one of my goals. So far I have his other guarapachangueo pattern down with my own improvisations but nothing near close to that. That right there is very similar to his Japan one and I think is one of my favorite things I see him do. Very original also. I've never seen anyone play it like he does and you could tell in his face that its his thing. Was he the one that started this outside a rumba setting, one guy three drums?

Guarapachangeo started well before 92 JC, Ive seen footage from some conguero friends of mine here who travelled to Cuba in the early, mid 80's and there is some footage of this pattern being played in ensemble rumba setting as well as 1 conguero.
The nickname Panga in Cuba is like being Smith. I know 2 Cuban congueros here called Panga, as well as about 5 well known ones in Cuba!

If this is a debate guys, I would have to go with Abakua's opinion. JC's would seem to me, to put the cart before the horse, so to speak. Nevertheless, it is a heck of a performance. I have mixed feelings though, about one person playing so much, when you have others available to play. After all what would you rather do - play guaguanco by yourself on 3 drums, or play as part of an ensemble? To me, the singing is a vital part of the rumba. Without it the drumming itself sounds incomplete.

Quinto Governor, I know you are not talking to me and I agree about vital things in a rumba but if you are able to do what Panga does then it opens up other doors. As you can see in Onile's post theres one guy playing 3 drums and it is still a rumba. Also I'm not into all the speed and flashiness I'm more into flavor and what Panga does is busy but it has flavor. I don't think anything is lost by it if anything it gives more options.

I'm not sure I can agree with you on this point, without more of the elements of a rumba, I would consider it a jam session.

What, in your opinion, are the elements of a rumba that are missing from here? You've got singers, dancers, clave, cata, cowbell, shekere, tumbadoras, and cajon, and they are playing, singing, and dancing rumba.

No, I believe we both got it from the same source, another brother on this forum!

It's actually a real good dvd of the group!

Sure it could be called that, but not all jam sessions are rumbas.

Can you address the other half of my question, though? I really am curious to hear what you think.
