Hi Laurent,

I think I can answer this one for you. Maculele (sometimes spelt 'makulele') is a folkloric rhythm from Brazil, I believe, possibly with African origins. Maculele is played to accompany a dance of the same name. Two dancers interact in the middle of a circle formed by participants, each with a set of wooden sticks (or very sharp knives!) which they hit together on every fourth beat. It's mostly associated with Capoeira (the Brazilian martial-art/dance) these days, and is really spectacular to watch and hear, when done well.

Hope that's of help!

Chelsea :)
