Single handed flam for you:

Attack with hand in vertical position so first stroke hits with knuckle of little finger then is followed by twisting the wrist so second stoke comes from knuckle of thumb. With a little practice, you can make it sound smooth and develop control of the flam speed. Also, it's easy to come back down with a finger or even a slap note.

I met a conguero from Kenya, Africa, last year who played extensively with individual fingers. He got good tones and adequate volume with single finger stokes.

Hope this encourages you. :D

Down here quite a few of us have lost fingers due to frostbite. My friend Hal plays bongos with the few fingers left in each hand so it works for him.

Because of the cold weather some guys play cowbell with a foot pedal which works nice when your fingers are numb. And of course, when it really gets cold and Elbow tone always works.
