Sat night, Live at Sydney's home of live Jazz, "The Basement" we performed with our Afro Cuban/Hip Hop/Funk/Reggae/Ska/just about every other genre band!

After taking approx 7 months off live performances to finish the album, SON VENENO made a long awaited return to the live scene.
Doors opened at 8.30pm, by 9.30, the venue was filled to capacity, with many many people turned away at the door.
The line to get in went all the way down to the next street!

Saturday night was a preview of the never before seen/heard all orignal material before the official album launch in October.

Its always a pleasure to play at The Basement, a stage which has hosted some of the greats of music inlcuding Arturo Sandoval, Dizzy Gillespie, Cubanismo, Afro Cuban All Stars, and countless big names since the 1950's right up till now, any given night you can go down and catch a truly inspiring live band, be it Jazz, Funk, Rock, Latin, Hip Hop, Reggae, Acid Jazz, Soul, etc you name it, if it has groove, its live and its high quality, you will see it at The Basement.

This band is one of the several projects I am currently involved with, but perhaps my favourite.. A friend of mine took some pics, here are a few of my favourites... I hope you enjoy.
Im the one on Tumbadoras and general percussion, on this night and for a week I am test driving/reviewing Meinl's Mongo Santamaria series congas thanks to Pidoca....
(I still love my Palladiums better!! :p)

My set up for this band can include: 2-3 tumbadoras, bongo, caxixi, shakers, assorted bells and cencerro, bata if needed, chekere, tambourine and general percussion, normally mounted on the rack, and whatever is required from the percussion section for the arrangement.

Suena Quinto!

Sentimiento manana! :D

Lautaro, friend of many years, our Pianist/additional electric guitar/backing and lead vocals. Can just make me out in background...
A truly gifted Pianist, extremely well versed in advanced afro cuban forms (amongst many others) and composition.

Cesar, musical director, 5 string electric bass/baby bass/percussion/backing vocals and composition.
An extremely talented musician, well versed in guitar, tres, tiple, quatro, quenas, zampoñas, charango and all Andean folkloric instruments and rythms as well as afro cuban forms.
In the words of Roberto Riveron (bassist from Cubanismo and Klimax) "Coño, ese hombre impresiona!"
Apart from being one of my closest friends of many years, it is without any ego and complete humility that I refer to him as a musical genius.

On the last tune, we finished up with a percussion/drums/horns and vocal arrangement where we jump off stage and walk through the crowd (without stopping the music) and go backstage to an original New Orleans Jazz swing type feel riff played by Sax and trumpet, accompanied by floor tom, snare, tambourine, vocals,
once we've made our way through the audience, we turned to a batucada feel adding bells and other hand percussion also, till we made it backstage...

Steve... drums/timbales/percussion/backing vocals and composition, also brother of Cesar (bassist)
In my humble opinion, one of Australia's most highly advanced and influential afro cuban style drummer/timbalero. Well versed also on guitar/bass/percussion/Andean intruments.
A great long time friend and fantastic musician.
