This is my first post but I'm hardly new to the forum as I've been lurking here for quite some time. I now feel as if I almost know a lot of people - that's the hello bit. Now for the thanks - I've learned stuff about about conga playing that I could never have got anywhere else. Through your comments and posts I'ver learned about kit, patterns, practice, music in general and most of all on the philosophy and ethos of drumming. May be I can now contribute a little!

Welcome Bison!
I have been playing congas for over 35 years and I have learned many new things on this site, including from new players such as yourself. Now guys like JC, who is senior to me, or Windhorse, who is junior to me, always have VERY interesting things to say. We don't all always agree, but that makes this site all the more richer.

Hello Abakua,
I've only been playing a couple of years. My teacher is Christian Weaver who runs latimbala. He has a number of bands and is heavily into rumba and folkloric music. I've only ever played three gigs on congas. I do a lot of practice and love it to bits. In addition to congas and bongos I'm learning the guiro and maracas, clave and shakers. I'm currently practicing with a bass player and a keyboard player, working up some cuban standards. I'm in my early 50's and have a day job that funds the drumming. I started playing Aspires but soon outgrew them and moved to LP accents (tribal wrap). I have a quinto, a conga and a tumba.

Hello Niall,
Yes they were my LP's you were playing - pity they dont sound like that when I play 'em.
What an excellent gig! Good to see the percussion section featured front and centre on the stage with the singers, horns etc tucked away at the back. Great stuff.
