Beautiful drums. What are they? Look kinda like Junior's drums.
Those clip mics u have on them.....how much did u pick them up for? After some of those myself.

Mikee

Hey Mike,, they're Mahogany Sols.. Same guys that made Valdjes. Here's a sound clip for ya. Clips are from last year's performance at a place called the Starhouse. First one is Abakua - no singing, so you can really hear the nice mellow tones of the drums.

Here's Yambu:

Iyesa:

and Guaguanco:

Hope y'all like 'em.. And no, this isn't the BushTic group.. This one is our Cuban drum and song study group - Bamboche..

Nice pix...whats the latin scene like down under? Are there many jam sessions where ppl gather & drum together?

Just finding out for the next time I visit Oz whether 2 take my bongo's or not.

Best,
Mikee

Bring the bongo if you like, you might even score a gig or 2!

Jam sessions, we organise em amongst ourselves with my crowd.
If you ever down in Sydney, let me know, the boys and I will hook up with you for a jam :)

In this group we do not use a bongocero.
Our timbalero plays the montuno bell and the bongo bell pattern simultaneously while also doing all fills, abanikos, masacote sections, breakdowns etc etc. Like Changuito developed.
You would never pick there is no bell player by listening though, he has mastered this technique extrememly well.
Also, the arrangement and tunes we play in this particular band are very busy with bloques and arrangements, very choppy stuff, so there is very little room for a bongocero.
From time to time, we book our former conguero (I was originally the bongocero) to play bongo and bell if we do a big festival or something like that.
