I dont think everyone here plays in church :p thats what he means.......
Yes I play in church, matter of fact the only playing I do is at home and church.
No you dont have to be christian to call yourself playing to God, you can be buddist and play to your God. But he is pointing the topic in the christian playing atmosphere amen?
I see his topic is pretty plain and simple, he is just asking all the christian drummers WASAAAA!!!!

In one form or another, we all play with the energy bestowed upon us by the "Creator" no matter which path you're on! To single out just one would tend to limit the love we all share on this forum!
Christians, Jews, Buddists, Nudists, ooops! We can all play for the "Creator" and maintain the peace without the 'divisions' one might attach with a religious label!

My original question was whether anyone was interested in talking about playing for God. Yes I am a Born Again Christian. Yes I do play at church. I also play in clubs etc... I am blessed to be paid for what I play; not play to be paid. and I use MEINL percussion. OOps... maybe i should admit to it seems that MEINL has got a bad wrap on some other topics lately.
I apologize for my short sightedness in not originally opening it up to all. It was just that I noticed that there were some Christians on the forum. I was specifically opening it up to them.
But having said that, This is an open forum, no one is singled out, ostrasided or chasticed for their religious beliefs. Far be it for me to start.
Culturally the drums were and are used in religious ceremonies. Let's talk about their cultural value and their original intented use in mordern day.
Whether you play in a church, A temple, a synagoge etc... (sorry if I missed any one out)

I agree that your not "singling out" because we have other topics that are focused on one particular group example there is a topic on another thread about africa and them playing.
Some how when people hear the word "christian" they get uptight and defensive, wether you can admit it or not thats just the way of this new time we live in.
Having said all that, thats the reason I choose the words wisely for a topic such as this because the majority prob. isnt christian and I dont like to see a lot of debating just because I want to focus on a topic in my area of interest. You may have had better results in the off topic section but then again you will still have people saying you cant do that cause because your leaving people out.
Example, I dont get tiffed when people start a topic about cuban players, because Im not cuban, I read them in interest but I dont get defensive. When they have topics of people playing in clubs I dont get upset just because I choose not to play in clubs, you know sometimes its better to just not input if you disagree with something then to open your mouth and cause a lot of unnecessary debating. I do it all the time, yet some people have a hard time doing that when it comes to a christian topic, they just gotta voice there disapproval.
Oh well to be or not to be! Either yu is or you isnt.... if you aint dont worry and move on

Wars have been started over the topic of "religion"! Christians, Catholics, Muslims etc. etc.
We all have a sense of SPIRITUALITY, this is the gift our Creator bestowed upon us, however MAN has put his slant on it by catagorizing it into little boxes known as Religion. "This religion is THE true way, THAT one is not, blah, blah blah! All for the sake of "Man's will to Control".
We are all on a chosen path in this life, with some detours along the way, but they happen for a reason. There are lessons to be learned along our path in this life, humility, love, compassion, anger, pain/suffering, lessons that will help in our spiritual evolution to becoming one with the universe. Religions have a tendency to be very selective as to who will evolve and who will be allowed into the "universe" aka "heaven" as long as it falls within their doctrine. So please, be careful in chosing a topic like this.
In your post you are equating Africa and Cubans with Christianity/Religion. First of all Africa and being Cuban is what it is, a state of being there is no arguing it, however Christianity/Religion is a choice. You are tossing the baby out with the bathwater with your example my brother!
In the world as it is today, there is too much devisiveness and not enough cohesiveness. If you plan on spewing forth words of wisdom learned from your preacher or some other religious leader, do so with inclusion in mind. Don't just repeat what it is that you heard someone say, or interpret their version of life!
Let it be yours, base it on your experience and knowledge of spiritualness!

For me I understand "the gift" of music that has been bestowed upon me, and because of my own deep spiritual belief, I have always played for a "higher purpose"....check out Psalm 18 to the musician...my favorite Psalm.....I am not a "christian", I just BELIEVE. I was born a Roman Catholic, became a Bhuddist in 1983, and now I am a son of Obatala/Las Mercedes-2 times, in the religion of Lucumi, so my spiritual path has taken me thru many changes.....I "respect" the "gift", and have played in all kinds of churches, bembes, guiro's and more.....my 2 congas..."JC" Johnny Conga.....interesting thread....

Well thats why I wasnt going to even comment on this topic, I have seen this many many times because I am a part of an moderator of many forums on the web abd I have been around this long enough to know, but the reason I did comment was because I knew this topic was going to end up in a debate over wether or not it was right to do it or not and I wanted my brother here to at least have one siding voice of opinion.
The reason I quoted here is, this is
for one, you dont know me or wether or not I am spewing actual experienced wisdom, or if im just repeating radio conversations.
For two, your right we have the right to bring up such topics BUT.... dont do it because you will get grief over it,
The bottom line is this and I will not comment on this again, the topic was started and ment to stay on that topic, the problem starts when people that cant refrain from posting thier comments that take it away from the original topic, example the topic didnt ask if you believe this thread should be here or that christianity should be singled out, so the rest of the comments actually should have been not even executed.
I dont mean to sound so harsh and im not looking for a comeback I'll just leave it at that and comment else were on the board. Just remember this one thing I respect other peoples opinions and beliefs, it just gets me how this topic went from one thing to something totally opposite, and this I had the feeling it would do.

I guess this is just a touchy subject thats why people dont really care to start such topics because so many people have so many different opinions and views.
Thats the reason I never started such topics,
the most I mension on the subject is pertaining to
drumming for the simple reason its too hairy of a topic, and
too many differences in opinions on it.
I knew better to even start commenting,
lets just get back to the percussions shall we,
save the church experience for the church boards.

I woodshed to be better tommorow than I am today. But when it's all said and done (and posted) it does not matter how well I can play mozambique with my left hand while holding down a martillo with my right hand and up beats on the tambourine with my right foot; If my heart/soul (the inner me) is not playing for the one that gave me the gift (in what ver setting it may be).

Good Idea, my appologies to everyone I didnt mean to get so uptight,
its not that no one here would like to discuss this topic there are people that would its just like you saw here already, so many views so many opinions, so much difference in beliefs its hard to have a discussion like this with out singling anyone out. But one thing we can all agree on is drumming period, wether it be for the Lord, the Devil, allah, Jim Jones etc.... we all love drumming and the discussion in that is great!
just a side note, the same thing happened to a trumpet forum im moderator at then I had suggested that we start a christian trumpeting section just for trumpeters that play in a christian atmosphere, and that worked better then just spouting off these sorts of topics in the general forums. It wasnt singling anyone out because if the Catholic trumpeters, buddist, baptist, athiest etc wanted there own section they were more then welcome to request one. I started that section and its still workin good till this day. Im not suggesting you need that here or saying I would try to start one, but just telling the story that I have been down this type of road before and thats how we solved that problem there. Just food for thought.
