The best Maracas, are the ones that fit the genre the best NO? If your playing Colombian music, get a colombian Maracas.
Otherwise, theres wooden ones, plastic, leather. Just have to try them out.

Greetings,
I have LP plastic maracas (a gift).. They are horrible.. I bought some wooden ones in Santiago de Cuba for about $2 which are ten times better..

The Venezuelan Maracas in general are very good.
My good friend Coro singer and percussionist (guiro & maracas) Peter Gomez recently brought me back a rawhide set from one of his tours to Venezuela. He now uses them in his work.
Peter has worked with Louie Ramirez, Johnny Ray, Africando, and many others. He's also in the band in the upcoming movie "Lavoe" starring Marc Anthony. These are the maracas he used. They're not Pan con Queso, but excellent nonetheless. Very dry and good volume.
We're hope to start carrying them at JCR Percussion.

I got some maracas while I was in Maracaibo Venezuela and they are some of the best sounding maracas that I have heard. They are not Pan Con Queso but still excellent, several people have asked me about them. So much so that I was planning on bringing several pair back on my next trip to Maracaibo. If they are the same ones that Isaac is talking about you won't have any problems selling them.

Lp has a set of Maracas with the PuertoRican Flag emblem. Do not buy them because the paint peel off very easy.

I have a set of LP Ebony plastic ones, the little round ones, and I really like them.
