Word!
Someone shoot me with a tranquiliser gun!! Thats how excited I am!!!!
My all time top favourite conguero master, Miguel 'Anga' Diaz is coming to Sydney with 'Omar Sosa Trio' in Feb 2006!
This is at the same prestigious club / jazz bar / institute of live music where I have played with my bands many many times over the years.
We are already on the Guest list!
I cannot farkin wait!!!
This man is my Conga idol, someone I have studied and looked up to for over 15 yrs. I had the opportunity several years ago to take some private tuition with one of his finest students while they were in Sydney, but nothing will compare to having the opportunity to meet Anga and see him perform live.
We have another local great Cuban conguero which is a great friend of mine, he arrived here like 10 years ago via Amsterdam who is long time friends with Anga, I can quite confidently say we will be hooking up for BBQ's, jamming etc with Anga like we did with my good friends from Cubanismo! ( As seen in THIS THREAD (click here) ) And yes, I will have my camera with me again!!
What you guys need to understand, is that here, we rarely have the opportunity to see internationally famous artists of this calibre, sure there are many many great musicians here, but to see a legendary figure of percussion like Anga, does not happen everyday, we cannot simply go down to the local club and check out Giovanni, Daniel Ponce, Bobby Allende, Ritchie Flores etc etc etc We never grew up seeing Ray Barreto, Mongo, Tata etc.. Sure, we've seen em on videos, read their articles, heard and studied/devoured all their recordings, but in the flesh, no.
Im am eagerly anticipating his arrival and cannot wait to sit down with my boys and rumbiar all night with Anga!
-Apologies for my rambling, Im just fukin excited!
 :p

OMAR SOSA TRIO (Cuba)
Omar Sosa (Piano) Anga Diaz (Percussion) Childo Tomas (Bass)
"Sosa is a genius, one of the truly illuminated minds of world jazz” (Billboard)
Nominated for 2005 Latin Jazz Album of the Year, Cuba’s Omar Sosa brilliantly blends the freedom of jazz with Afro-Cuban and Latin rhythms, hip hop and electronica to create some of the most irresistible music on this planet. Omar has been described not only as the new king of Cuban jazz but a genius on the stage of contemporary world music. His group features Miguel ‘Anga’ Diaz – Cuban master percussionist and a noted band leader in his own right – who has played with both the Buena Vista Social Club and the Afro-Cuban All Stars. Completing this spellbinding trio is Mozambique bass player, Childo Tomas. A limited number of early bird tickets are now on sale for the Sydney and Melbourne dates.
