I'm a singer song writer whose now playing congas and can't get enough if it! What a relief not to worry about the key. I can tightly keep the beat on most all tunes, but obviously conga chops will take a life time - a privilage I looking forward to spending. I've alway drummed on things since I was a kid -just wanted to know if anyone can't stop keeping the beat when listening to the radio in their car. Best, Ron

Hi Johnny Conga
and welcome redconga.

Redconga, I also like to drum on my thighs when there's no drum around and find it is strengthening practice - like how a set drummer may practice with sticks on pillows to build strength.

I wouldn't "worry about the key" either, BUT congas are about the most tonal hand drums out, and if they're not somewhere in the tonality of the other instruments they can sound real off and bad. Many players tune their congas accurately. I saw Giovanni Hidalgo using an electronic tuner at a jazz fest we both played in years ago.

There are some "standard" tuning intervals I've seen discussed elsewhere in this forum. Welcome and keep enjoying!
