With the recent passing of Miguel 'Anga' Diaz, we held a rumba in his honour at a recent gig at a prominent live music venue here in Sydney.
The band is Mamacita, a recently formed 5 piece latin jazz, afro cuban jazz, afro brazilian jazz outfit with many descargas.
Local percussionist Cindy runs the band. Soon the band will grow in member numbers, including a full horn line up, extra percussion and vocalist.
I had the pleasure of introducing Cindy to Anga earlier in the year and we spent some very special time with him.
We were devestated to hear the news of his passing, so we held an rumba at her gig on Friday night.
I was asked to sit in on quinto during some of the bands guaguanco and bembe arrangements, then a bti later on, I was asked to remain on quinto as we got a few percussionists up for a rumba for Anga, seen in the pics are Emiliano (local bongocero/conguero and guitarist) and Giorgio aka Yoyo (local timba drummer/timbalero and all round percussionist) as well as Cindy and Tony on percussion, Fabian Hevia who is also a facilitator/teacher at The Sydney Conservatorium of Music on drums.
Here are some pics of the night, enjoy.
Cindy descargando, Fabian on drums...
