Aloha Conga Forum Bruddah's and Sista's,

There was a rare sighting the other night in Hawaii. I had the ultimate pleasure of meeting one of our own forum members, all the way from Israel, Yoni!
This is my very first encounter, with what I would decribe as one of the most awesome percussionist out there. Yoni arrived in the islands the other day to visit some family and contacted me in regards to getting a taste of some "Hawaiian Congas"! I picked up Yoni and wisked him down to Spectrum Recording Studio in downtown Honolulu and gave him his fix of Volcano Percussion. Yoni took a seat behind the Drums and bonded instantly with them. The rest is history.
Yoni is a super guy. Very humble, but when he's poundin' on dem drums, he's fluid in his strokes and a pleasure to watch and listen to. He also gave us a sample of his Darbuka Drum playing. All I can say is, Awesome!
Yoni, from the bottom of my heart, I thank you for pleasure of entertaining us with your fabulous drum playing.
Like they say, a picture is worth a thousand words..refer to the attached Pic's.

Keep on Poundin'.... Aloha, maSSivdrums

Wow, thanks so much man. I'm floored. What a fun session, too!

Those were some great drums and you sound great yourself!

See you again this week for sure!

Cool, nice pics of Yoni & yourself!! Nice nice drums of course, but with fiberskins?????

BTW, I think I've been to Spectrum, Is it off of the main drag? Back in the early eighties (1980??), I went in a studio off the main drag in Honolulu with a singer from a band .. I can't remember the name. Three ladies LeMuria?
Any way that band had a good percussionist Master Gibson or some such.
The lead vocalist lived down the hall from me in Ala Napuaa apartments.
One day she dragged me to a studio to record on a session for Henry Kapono.

Massive, does any of this sound familiar to you? I would appreciate any information. I was young, I don't remember too much.

Sorry for the OT

T

Aloha Yoni,

Yes, we will hook up before you leave so we can share with you some Hawaiian hospitality....

Aloha Tonio,

Yes, they are Fiberskyns. We have alot of humidity here in the islands and with the use of Fiberskyns we can compensate for that. Remo heads and Volcano shells really compliment each other. Ask Yoni, he'll vouch for that.
Yes, the Spectrum Recording Studio you went to in the 80's is the same studio, only its in a new location across the police Main headquaters. The owner of the studio is Kirk Thompson, of the local legendary group Kalapana. Kirk later formed the group Lemuria which was a Jazz/Funk type group which featured the world reknown percussionist Master Henry Gibson. Who was your lady friend, Star Williams? Azure McCall? You were very fortunate to be hooked up with them. Hey, Henry Kapono, he's still playing and just released a CD.
If you are ever on Oahu, you're welcome to look me up and we can hook up.
That invitation is also open to the rest of the Conga Forum family!!!
Keep on Poundin'... Aloha, Nolan

Nolan, Thank you so much for the info. Now things are coming back to me. I was right Lemuria!!, and it was Star that hooked me up.
I had a faint feeling that it was Henry Gibson. But his credit was Master Gibson, and I never saw them in person (as a group).
I wonder if they ever used the track I was on Henry's LP??? A few months after that I joined the Army without even saying good bye :( or did I?

Hey, just a news-flash - another quick sighting in Hawaii.

Guess who's the monkey!

Not bad for a 48 year-old chimp, huh?

Right you are, bro... I heard they remove the fruits in many areas so tourists won't get assassinated by coconuts.

I was just showin' off for mom and tryin not to assassinate anyone with a conganut.

:D
