I love to play congas in non-traditional settings. I am very much a student on congas and have tried to come up with variations on traditional rhythms that fit with other music genres.

Wow Mike! Nice work brother!

I really liked the "somewhere conga" mix and was truly impressed with your sax and vocals on "the very thought".

Your conga sounds seem nice and clear. What do you record them with?

That is a great sound of yours, I really enjoyed the tune samples. So what software do you use to record them (providing it's done on your computer)?

I really like the spicy technique you use on the congas, fits real nice with the flavor of the music!

Nice one Mike,

We follow the same path on both sides of 'the pond'
Impro on St Thomas very nice, and love the sound you get from the congas.
Difficult to hear the subtleties of the Pandeiro, 'pocket drum kit'. Do you use Cajon on any track?

You have inspired me to get some recorded music out there.

Thanks to all for your kind words and encouragement. I recommend using Fruity Loops, it's versatile and funky. On the jazz tunes i believe the engineer used another program to edit the parts, i'm not sure which mixing and editing software he used.

Everything was mixed by a friend of mine from church. Thanks again to all. I hope to have a recording of our rumba group in KC by fall. Best wishes to all and may your slap be heard around the world.

eeee congamyk, I hope this isn't belaboring the subject, but more detail on the quality of your sound!!

1) Mic on each drum? or one condenser?
2) Kind of mic(s)?
3) Drums on floor? Hard floor, board, carpet?
4) EQ settings. Any effects?

Hey congamyk , try to get compression on the congas maybe a 1176 or a multi band to it the 250-500hz region since the segun is way too loud on the ocassional hits(not the double triplet riffs or 4 stroke?-its variable ya know?). I would also tweek the verb for a higher algo or change the LF crossover point so there is less resonance of the quinto open notes-its buring them-plus it kills the slaps etc.
oh overall try some automation of amplitude on various sectins of the tune, it'll give more impact to the song and not always have a focus on congas. I'm sure its not a Candido vain tune is it?
I have't heard it on my main monitors, but so far so good!! I check out teh other tuneages

Funky stuff congamyk! I like the grooves. I use an old Yamaha drum machine for practice sometimes. Also, garageband on my mac has some kickin' drum patches you can loop and groove to. Like your sound man.

Just an update... I've been selling old equipment and trying to buy some new. Here's my latest .....

I also for the first time bought a home recording system so I can create some real music from home. I researched as much as I could and came up with this; the Omega Lexicon.

Omega Lexicon

It comes with everything you need to do home recording except for the mic(s). Check out the brief track link below. I put togther it together in a few minutes using a Fruity Loops track I previously created, 2 congas and a timbale bell.
I call this - "Troostin!" named after Troost Avenue, a famous street in KC
