Just curious how many forummers use a kick drum and how you feel about using one? Since it's a trap set element, is there any feeling of compromise as a hand percussionist, or is it your view that whatever "gets the job done" within the performance situation is what counts most? Do you feel strongly that it adds a highly desirable beat emphasis. Discuss...?

Apologies to forum control. This should have been posted in "ACCESSORIES", not in the OPEN. Mea Culpa.

Welcome, when a kick drum was added to the Timbales,it gave a lot of punch to the acentuation and allowed the timbaleros to play a more variety of rhythms, the drum set was the consumation of the multi/percussion structures, personally if I play drum, I welcome a percussionists, and if I play percussion i welcome a drummer,(if he knows how to play with a percussionist.Dr. Zaragemca

ho congatick
i tried kickdrum, but i felt uncomfortable with it. i play standing, be it timbales or congas. anyway, there is either a drumset or a doundoun in company.
but i am a poor player on drumsets, and if somebody else is used to trapdrum, and doesnt care about the limitation of moving the body when playing, there is no reason not to use kickdrum.
greetings from good old europe

I use a 16" kick that I built out of an old floor tom, tuned low with a fiberskyn head. I like it alot and its a great add to the congas. I use a hi-hat on the other foot and various accessories on a LP Gajate as well.

deadhead,
I assume therefore you're a sit-down player?

Yes Congatick, I am a sit-down player. I am setup like you would play a drumset, accept instead of toms and a snare I have congas in their place. I could imagine that a standing player would have a harder time with a regular drumset kick. Maybe a cocktail style kick with an inverted pedal would be a better option for a standing player.
