What's the best way to keep skins lubed and your hands from cracking like a mud flat in July?
Red palm oil, shea butter, tea tree oil, coconut oil, lanolin, your grandma's secret mix?

Heads: Manteca or other fat or oil

Yeah, I forgot about Corn Husker's--good stuff.
So manteca on the skins? Isn't that just . . . lard? 
Maybe not. Manteca de corojo is red palm oil I think.

these faktory waterbufalo skins are too dry. i dont know how they do it, but it seems as if the skins were not able to keep any moisture. probably everything is washed out and dehydrated. naturally treatet skins are never that dry.
so what i do first with a factoryskin is to put something on, what provides some moisture for the skin.
i take polyglyceryl-4-isostearate for that porpose.
you will find it in some of the cheaper handlotions.
i do that 1 up to three times, till i am content with the sound, wich will get warmer by that.
after that i put some red palm oil on the head from time to time.
if your skin is crackling, tape your fingers before playing.

I have a skin on my requito for over 20 years..the New Buffalo skins from Thailand now there life is around 5 years though i have on my Pearls skins that have been on them for over 5 years....I treat my skins once or twice a year with Shea butter or palm oil.....very lightly spread over the head with the head tuned totally down to no sound at all ...rub it in (thin coat) let it sit in the sun for about 4 to 5 hours then let dry for about 3 days...what ever is left on the head wipe clean....that's it..."JC" Johnny Conga...

At the risk of asking an obvious question: Where do you find palm oil? I didn't see it at the grocery store, would it be with hand lotions or something?

I have another question. I remember someone said something about stearic acid, I think he said to avoid it but can't remember for sure. Does anyone know anything about this?

Hi ,
I find Ballistol oil to be very practical. I use it for the skins and for the rim and lugs also, because it protects metal against corrosion. One can put it on almost everything, it doesn´t become old and stinky and is not poisonous. Fishermen and forest rangers use it for their equipment.

In the absence of sun do you think you could use some kind of heat lamp or something?

hi all
there is a product called "propylacticare".
it's a hand lotion sold in pharmacies. just a few drops on your hands will take care of them and the skin at the same time.
