There is an area, right below the middle knuckle of my middle finger on the right hand that started hurting. It feels sore when I play or put pressure on it. I assumed it was a callus and I've been scrubbing it with a pumice stone and I haven't played much in the last month but it is still bothering me.
Does that sound like a callus? Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Don't use pumice stone or try to gauge it out with a needle, there is a high risk of infection sidelining your playing. Whilst calluses is not a bad thing you have an in growing one.
I had the same problem in the same exact area you described and was advised to use
http://www.drscholls.com/product.aspx?prodid=41 I held the pad in place with tape for the prescribed 48 hours, and the callus just peeled away like magic. After that I protected the area with band-aid for about a few days when playing for and that was it! No recurrence since.
