There is an area, right below the middle knuckle of my middle finger on the right hand that started hurting. It feels sore when I play or put pressure on it. I assumed it was a callus and I've been scrubbing it with a pumice stone and I haven't played much in the last month but it is still bothering me.

Does that sound like a callus? Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Don't use pumice stone or try to gauge it out with a needle, there is a high risk of infection sidelining your playing. Whilst calluses is not a bad thing you have an in growing one.
I had the same problem in the same exact area you described and was advised to use
http://www.drscholls.com/product.aspx?prodid=41 I held the pad in place with tape for the prescribed 48 hours, and the callus just peeled away like magic. After that I protected the area with band-aid for about a few days when playing for and that was it! No recurrence since.

Yes it sounds like a callous to me..Before u use the pumus stone, u should soak the hand in warm to hot water first, then gently use the stone to "shave" down the callous...Yes it will still be sore....it is part of the path of a hand drummer...if it was Karate , your knuckles would hurt from breaking boards...so whats a little callous?....if it continues to bother u than use a bandaid over it..."JC" Johnny Conga... :D

Derbano that sounds more like a "corn" rather than a callous to me....In all my 41 years of playing, never ever heard of it done that way......"JC" Johnny Conga... :D

You are quite right though JC. A callous growing inwards could be classified as a corn and will hurt when you bang the drum no matter how much padding you protect it with.

A bog standard callus should pose no problem should not hurt and is part of the normal development of the hand for hand-drummers, guitarist, racket sports players etc
Once I followed the treatment recommended by the pro at the pharmacy my pain was gone and in checking the area now it just has a normal hardish skin.

I'll give it a try, thanks.
