Based on folkloricoSD's post :
>>Hey Charlie and Tonio, I was wondering if you guys attend the Thursday night latin jazz jam session at Voz Alta downtown? I live in San Diego also, and I go to the jam every thursday. It is a great place to go and make contacts and sit in and play. It is led by the trumpet player Bill Caballero. If you want more info I would be happy to help you out.<<

Bill still around huh? Not familiar with Voz Alta. where is it? Downtown? I remember when Bill played at the Madrid and other clubs. I did the DT scene a few years back after Gene Perry was at Croce's or as he would say Coroche's. Croce's gig was a killer. 4hours in that cramped space. Allthough it had good acoustics in there.

Let me know the details, I'll stop by some time.

Haha sweet pics... Thats Victor, playing on Derbeno's skin on skins!!! Funny you mention Gene Perry and Croches Tonio, because Gene Perry is actually my teacher. I'll tell him you said hi if you want. Defenitely come out you guys because there are some great congueros that attend these jam sessions. Victor (as seen in the picture), Derbeno himself, Roy Gonzalez, Charlie Chavez, Mark Lamson, etc... I hope to see you all there.

Hey I checked it out last for a bit. Couldn't stay for I had to go to band rehearsal.
They sure did get started late as mentioned.

Who was on Bajo?

It was cool, got sometiming issues at times, but overall great stuff.

I couldn't make last nite either Tonio, due to band rehersal as well. If you can describe the bass player I can tell you who it was. The usual bass player is Andy Esparsa(?) I might have spelled his last name wrong.

Actually I couldn't see the bajo player. He was sitting behind Bill and the weird stand he had. I think it might have been Andy.
Keys sounded kinda awful. Maybe it was the acoustics in the place, or the patch he was using sounded rather lame. For congas, timbales is sounded great, maybe somewhat muddy though. Not much to expect with such a small place.
But its about music so it was cool.

I only stayed for like 3 or 4 tunes. Bill called up some guys, like you had to sign up - whats up with that? Should I have just brought up some bongos and say hey , can I play?

If you want to sit in, just go up to Bill and tell him you would like to sit in. He's usually pretty good with rotating people in. If you want to play bongo it would be a good idea to bring your own, and also your campana. If you want to sit in on conga, you don't have to worry about bringing your own because the house player lets everyone use his. As far as the acoustics go, that room is really weird and narrow shaped. And it does get muddy sometimes.
