You can always do like I did in 2003 - work and save your money and just go.
For a big part of that year I did a round world trip with the main purpose of studying percussion. I had some contacts in Africa and no contacts in Cuba, but everything fell into place as far as meeting the right people to study with (even met Changuito!). Also visited Germany, Crete, Mexico, LA, Hawaii and Sydney. The trip took my playing up another level.
It was the best of times and... sometimes it was the worst. I had so many crazy adventures and experiences you wouldn't believe it.
That trip had practically everything, you name it.
There is much to recommend it, just don't get sick in West Africa!
