So today was Armando Peraza day in SF! There was a free tribute show in downtown SF with many heavy hitters there, Armando Peraza, Giovanni Hidalgo, Michael Spiro and John Santos as well as many other talented musicians.

Armando was honored with letters from the Mayor of San Francisco and the State of California for musical acheivement here in the Golden State.

Not only was the music incredible, and the weather great, but there was a lot of heartfelt praise from John Santos and Giovanni Hidalgo with Giovanni calling him "the father".

Mickey Hart and Zakir Hussain the famous tabla player also made cameos backstage.

I know I am a horrible photographer, I took some photos anyways.

We can barely see Armando in the red shirt in the shade, Giovanni in white to the right, John Santos right of that in black, and next to him is Michae Spiro.

Here's Giovanni, who played really well and even took a turn on the timbales which he also rocked!

All in all a great two hour concert on a beautiful day for free..
Sponsored by LP for Armando..

I thought it was pretty funny how Armando and Giovanni were playing their respective LP models with the tags still hanging of of them and the bag with that little tool you get with the drums still attached.

Michael was playing LP Patatos, no Spiro model yet, and John Santos was on Giovanni's.

again sorry for the crappy photos..

thanks for taking the pics and sharing them; crappy or not. there were certinaly plenty of the heavy hitters of the bay area rumbero scene on hand today. it was a perfect event - great weather, music, small crowd and plenty of t shirts to buy  you could even buy the latest john santos quintet cd ??? all joking aside 'it was great'. i was glad to be a spectator and see old friends.

Yes, thanks for sharing. I wonder if some LP staff was filming the event? Because I guess that might be the kind of event Martin Cohen would share at congahead.com?
Just a thought.

BNB, hey thanks for sharing the pics!! You must had a great time to Honor Armando !!

I must say, that I suck at photos too, but one trick that was instilled was to get the light(sun in this case) behind you. But with all the excitment, I wouldn't have done any better.

Also don't hesitate to use the flash even during daylight especially when the sun is behind the subject.

I have to look up some Armando fotos when he was with Santana. At that time I met him and Orestes back stage, and I mentioned that it would of had been fun to rumba with them earlier , and Armando responded that would of had been great , because they where bored **** less most of the day hanging out at the hotel lobby.

Nice video, great tribute to Armando Peraza. That almost sounded like a batarumba at the end, with Giovanni playing Iya on his tumba. Who was that playing quinto? Also, who was the lead singer?
