Swapping cow skin head to different congas

Postby TobyLB » Sun Jan 11, 2009 1:30 am

I am hoping that somebody might be able to help me out.

I have just purchased a new set of congas. They came with Cow Skin heads that had been used on the congas for the last seven years. Still in very good condition. I wanted to swap those same cow skins to another set of congas. Although the dimensions are the same the cow skins had become too wide at the top to fit on the second set of congas. Over time they had obviously stretched to such an extreme, the flexibility and 'bounce back' had been lost.

Can anyone give me some suggestions (hopefully that you have put into action) that can help me re-skin these cow skin heads onto my second set of congas.

Regards

Not sure if I understood your problem....

Are you saying that where the skins bend (where the mouth of the drum goes) is too big for the second set of congas? If so, then your other set is simply not the same size and dimensions.

Regardless, one thing you could do is re-wet the skins upside down in about 2 inches of water (so you don't wet the whole head thus excluding where the ring is) and re-mount. Leave a bit of pressure on the lugs so the head can re-adjust to the new borders. It might stretch your head down a bit more but you'll get them to snuggle the new drums better.

Hope this helps some.
